CNCC updated advice

But their economy relies on tourism.

The world economy relies a lot on tourism and many countries/islands rely entirely on it. Are they fcuked? Probably.

In 2019, Travel & Tourism?s direct, indirect and induced impact accounted for:

US$8.9 trillion contribution to the world?s GDP
10.3% of global GDP
330 million jobs, 1 in 10 jobs around the world
US$1.7 trillion visitor exports (6.8% of total exports, 28.3% of global services exports)
US$948 billion capital investment (4.3% of total investment)

The only similarity is its land surface & distance from the equator! Every other factor is to nz's advantage in avoiding a pandemic.

Unfortunately they can't afford to keep covid at bay long term due to needing that tourism.

The first bit of your sentence is the most relevant one - World economy. If this was just us or any other said single nation, yep, shit show. But it's not and we're not. A global economy will make adjustments and there's a serious amount being generated globally in big pharma right now. Good times ahead? Not great but we're not having to go full on Yorkshireman yet.

& I just mean that they can't afford to keep covid at bay long term.

You seem to be saying we didn't lockdown hard and fast because what? Shits and giggles? We could have done the same. It'd have been cheaper, and we'd all be back at work/school/caving/finding something else to be angry at on the 'net.

Because we live in a leaky sieve & nobody believed it would be this bad. (I have edited 2nd part of my previous reply for clarification, before seeing yours)

We have sea literally around us. It's not leaky. We kept the doors open. Much like Singapore is an island, a much, much more densely populated place. Remind me of their course of action and where they are now? And as to nobody believed it would be so bad? Another revision. The Italians were at their wits end telling us what was to come. And we or rather the government didn't act. Italy got a grip early (mainly because of circumstance, they had no choice) and are now fairing better than us by some margin.

& the government obviously have a better understanding of our population...

Right. That's their plan is it. You're making not much sense so I'm out.

They don't really have a plan, they just know total lockdown would never work long term with inner cities.

It?s all very well telling people publicly why it makes sense to cross into other tiers for practical reasons. I mean that could even sound like a reasonable reason to probably most people.

What I find more frustrating is the people travelling miles from their house to exercise in the countryside round me, when they have woods, fields and countryside on their own doorstep. Yes you may have walked around it 100 times recently and you may want a change of view but those of us living at your chosen destination don?t necessarily want you here.

There is a massive rise in cases in my area, I?m not talking county, I?m talking across a couple of large villages - people I know are sick, some pretty badly, they don?t have underlying conditions, they were fit and healthy before this and recovery time for them in currently unknown. These people aren?t old, they aren?t overweight, don?t smoke, but yet they got sick, really sick.

I live in a very touristy area, but at the height of lockdown it was so quiet, right now we have no idea where people are going. They might come here for a walk, some fresh air, but they may also use our supermarkets, public toilets and cash points. They might not know they are carrying any virus, but what if they are, and what if they spread it around, or pick it up from being here. The transmission spreads both ways after all. You could take the virus back to your area and be the reason for an outbreak among healthy people living near you.

It?s not about trying to see how much you can get away with, patting yourself on the back because you found a loophole in the guidance and shouted all about the unfairness of this all on the internet. It?s about taking time to consider the bigger picture and doing your bit to help out. Be proud that you can help out, you?re able to tell your kids/grandkids people of the future that despite it feeling really unfair, you did your bit. After all, the reason you probably exist in this world is someone in your family tree did their bit in years gone by to help.

Don?t be the problem. Be part of the solution

I'm in Wales where we are allowed unlimited local exercise, starting from home. It's supposed to be a stay at home situation, but on my 7 mile walk around the Foryd, I see plenty of people having a nice leisurely drive round looking at the sea, sometimes they are sitting in their car with a flask of coffee, or eating some takeaway chips. Others are a bit more high octane judging by the various Mac Donald's effluvia decorating the roadside. So my conclusion is that people are still taking the piss. And apart from the Mc Donald crap spreaders, most of these people think they are doing nothing wrong.

Bit more Welsh flavour here. We had original lockdown lasting about a month longer than England when the Chancellor's inappropriately named eat out to something or other initiative started. So for the first month or two it was river and Foryd walk. At some point we had a 10km or so drive for exercise which gave access to some local slate quarry walks. Then, maybe in July, we could drive everywhere, so I did loads of Ffestiniog quarry walks, and some stuff in the Conwy Valley. Conwy then went into local lockdown, so I could still do some Ffestiniog quarries. We then had a firebreak for 2 weeks, so it was back to the river and the Foryd. Out of firebreak, all Wales was available again, so a couple of Conwy Valley trips, then, just before Christmas to Tier 4, which is probably more extreme than England's, exercise from home, we don't get the 10km drive to the start of the excercise now.

Take home message. Don't take the piss and f*** it up for the rest of us.

[gmod]Hi all. It's interesting that a link to CNCC advice has prompted such discussion. However, we've had complaints about the language being used by some. You know who you are! It's not necessary. Please tone it down or Pegasus will be in touch. Thank you.[/gmod]

No-one, but no-one, is going to drive 15 miles to the shops rather than the one they normally go to 2 miles away. This is a very common situation if you live in the sticks. Kirkby Lonsdale is now tier 4, from tier 2. If you live in Cowan Bridge are you going to drive to Lancaster?
No, of course not, because Lancaster is Tier 4 too  ;)

It is indeed, and is in Lancashire would you believe it.

Less than a week after the previous statement, we are all change again. The following statement has just been approved by our Officers this evening and will be posted on our website tomorrow:

The third national lockdown is upon and this sees a return of the Government message to ?Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives? as the country tries to stop the spread of the virus and prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed. As with the March 2020 lockdown, leaving home is now only permitted for a limited number of reasons.

Some of you will be wondering about provisions for exercise, potentially including caving, during lockdown.

The restrictions include provisions for exercise during lockdown to help people maintain fitness and to support wellbeing. However, this exercise must only be taken alone, with your household/ bubble, or with one other person, and it must be in your immediate local area (defined as your village, town or part of the city in which you live).

For the vast majority of us, who either prefer to cave with a group of friends, or would need to travel away from our immediate local area to go caving, this means venturing underground is sadly off the cards for the duration of this lockdown. Instead, we advise that the next several weeks provide a much better opportunity to repair oversuits, clean equipment and plan your summer adventures instead.

For the small number of people who live on the doorstep of our caves and are intent on visiting them as part of your exercise, we urge you to respect the restrictions on who you can exercise with, and to ensure your exercise regime is low risk and well within your capabilities.

We can?t wait to bring you better news over the coming months and to see a return to caving in our region very soon.

I don't want to be a spoilsport and have found much of this discussion informative and interesting.  However, this thread is titled 'CNCC updated advice' and CNCC advice is aimed at those caving (or not caving) in the Dales.  For the Peak District cavers should look to advice given by the DCA.  I realise the thread has drifted but want to point out that CNCC would not dream of offering advice to people 'exercising' in the Peak whatever that may mean.

:ang: ;)

[mod]I have split the tangential discussion about caving under the new lockdown to a different topic: https://ukcaving.com/board/index.php?topic=27423.25[/mod]
