Of course for real conservation we should seal all the sites, bar access to everything, and have big brother watching us and nanny telling us what to do all the time...

Then again responsibility and freedom are worth what? A few bits of carpet? Spray paint? carved arrows every few inches? Litter, fires, broken glass and needles? Perhaps we dont want that sort of people in our caves and mines? Or would education and peer pressure work better (don't ask me I havent a clue), does naming and shaming work?

Whats it to be? elitist or inclusive? Discuss

Please, everyone, keep a sense of proportion. Regrettable though the incident was Swildons was not trashed and this sort of incident is rare. I refer you to my previous post about abandoned digs.

Well it would be silly before as they havent done it yet. During I would hope you would say something like, "Would you mind awfully not doing that please". After comes the punishment so people get the idea.

For those think that this behaviour was fairly innocuous, just imagine the response of the BEC if they'd tried this down St. Cuthbert's.

To go down St Cuthberts you have to be accompanied by an official leader. I suspect that the leader would've put a stop to the activity before it even started, so it's not really a fair comparison.

They are at it agian ............... met a guy in Swildon's today from Reading University with 4 or 5 carpet faces hanging from his belt, after a lenghty conversation with him i managed to grasp a basic understanding of what he was trying to achive, apparently it's a study to do with stress and how people cope with it in different enviroments i.e. above ground and then underground, now iam sure there is more to it, although to be honest he baffled me abit.

In the guy's defence he was removing them from the cave and he seemed a pretty switched on caver.

In response to Chrissy Castle's point. I agree some abandoned dig sites are very offensive, even more so the current ones. I have a couple of sites in mind. Also the bailing equipment at the mud sump in Swildons hole, although it serves a purpose, it looks horrendous...

But two of the best things about swildons short round trip were the neat little bailing set up for the mud sump and the wookey sign before sump 1.

Thing like bailing setups are a necessary evil that make the round trip possible - although any broken buckets/redundant gubbins should be removed.

I filled a couple of bags with crap that had been left at St Valentines sump in giants. I've replaced it though with a load more crap (pipes/pumps etc) but at least they are serving a purpose.

Hmm, it seems to be happening again....

The Wookey Hole sign is AOK `cos it's now part of the "history" of the cave but please let's not have loads of other stuff put down there! The questionably amusing (and very out of date) little "Bin Laden Wanted Dead or Alive" sign has been removed.
