An amazing Spanish expedition to Cueva Culiembro in the Picos de Europa has connected the rift beyond Sump 4 to Pozu Jultayu (aka 2/7). Taking advantage of the low water levels created by the freezing weather, they established a camp close to the old limit and began a series of bolt climbs. When they reached the downstream side of Choke Egbert, the former end of Pozu Jultayu pushed by OUCC in the 1990s, they noticed a side passage that connected to a high level gallery which eventually dropped into the trunk phreatic passage known as the London Underground.
This means that the Ario Caves Project, which has recently opened two new entrances to the system and had p;anned to push Egbert this summer, will have to rethink its objectives, but in the meantime I take my hat off to the team, which was led by the Valencia cave diver Frida Primera de Abril.
I’ve had an email from Frida, who says they have left the system rigged, so non-divers will be able to visit the new pitches from the 315m entrance shaft we connected last year, Pozu Jou Tras la Jayada. The biggest, she says, is 142.6 metres deep, and has been called Mierda Dura, Ingleses. Odd name, but an admirably precise measurement.
The new link takes the system's depth to something close to 1,500 metres.
