Dan-yr-Ogof issues

Hi everyone
Sadly I have to report some issues around access to Dan-yr-Ogof. There will be a more detailed email to all DYO Wardens later today, but in the meantime everyone who visits the cave, whether as a Warden or as part of a visiting group, should take note of the following:

When you leave the cave via the cavers' gate (i.e., when the showcave has closed) you MUST make sure that the gate is firmly and securely closed. At the end of last year one party came out and inadvertently left the gate wide open, with ensuing upset to the showcave management. Then last weekend, despite stern warnings to all Wardens about the likely consequences of a repeat, showcave staff checking found that the gate was not secured shut. I cannot emphasise enough how serious this is.
The Warden responsible for the caving party must stay at the gate until everyone is out, and then check and double-check and check again that the metal gate is definitely closed.

As if that wasn't enough of a problem, I am frustrated to hear that some members of a caving party last weekend were disrespectful to members of the showcave staff.
I am waiting to receive a full first-hand account, but it should - I hope - go without saying that cavers privileged to visit one of the UK's finest caves thanks to the generosity of the showcave management should treat everyone at cave complex, staff and general public alike, with the utmost courtesy and respect. This also extends to taking care and being very discreet when changing in the car park.

Your co-operation is appreciated.
Tony Baker, DYO Cave Advisory Panel Chair and Wardens' Sec.
