Daren Cilau - Flooded

Morning all.

Following reports from members of CSS who has visited HRC recently - it has been discovered Rock Steady Cruise is completely sumped and impassable.
We do not know how long this will last, given it is unprecedented in Daren history.
Hard rock diggers may pump it out come later on in the new year if still sumped.

TLDR: Rock Steady Cruise sumped, no trips to beyond possible.

Must add, it is rather hilarious that even if the merry monks priory road team manage to make a connection - we are unable to do the through trip.

Out of nosiness and daftness, how wet is the entrance series in these conditions, not expecting dry obviously... just asking as considering a trip in a few weeks (to replace one I didn't do due recently due to the 3 week cough/flu-like thing) and can't see anything getting dryer in a hurry

The entrance series is less pleasant when really wet but has always been passable (except when it was frozen once maybe??)

Actually I was wondering about frozen especially if I end up going towards end Jan or something, but more the other entrance for Cnwc in case it wasn't possible to exit that way and you had to go back to Daren entrance series again, which may be tiresome and risk callout.

Apologies marsat, I'm digressing your thread. Please ask a mod to delete my posts if required

I've been through when maybe the first 5m or so were frozen and it provided quite a nice slide into it (for me at least). Does it freeze more than that?

You'll be fine as long as it isn't stupidly low in the way of temperature. The entrance series is always passable, the only issue is if the entrance freezes over (which is rare nowerdays).

Reminds me of our inaugural SSC Long Round Trip (Descent 299) and the return passage was sumped, first time seen since discovered in 30 odd years.

I can recall one occasion, probably late 80's, when the entrance was impassable. First prospective entrants had returned to the cottage and a group of us including Arthur with his plumbers blow torch and a propane cylinder returned to attempt to clear it. One of us got halfway through but then the melted ice started to refreeze around them prompting an exit and abandonment.

When down to HRC yesterday, water level hasn't changed much since I discovered the flood last weekend. I've placed the row of four rocks at the shore line so it's easier to see how quickly it is draining, so please don't move them if you for a look. I'll next be there late Feb so will report back then, unless anyone else is going between now and then and can take another photo for comparison.

PS a minor bit of pedantry, it's the start of the Ovaltines that is flooded. The Rock Steady Cruise doesn't start till further west, beyond the flood. My mistake.
