Daren Cilau - Flooded

Not sure things will dry out much short term

Yellow warning for rain tomorrow 18:00 onwards

The original Ovaltiney song from the 1930s. My late father used to sing it as a bedtime lullaby to us

I believe the regulars still sing this every evening, while sat round the camp fire at Hard Rock, warming their hands on steaming mugs of a certain malted milk beverage... Ah yes, Horlicks.

Nothing to do with Daren but I was looking at the grave of former Horlicks chairman (and son of one of the original inventors) on the island of Gigha earlier this year
Worth a visit even for Ovalteenies.

To update this: Last Saturday I checked out the water level again, which has fallen significantly so the passage approaching the first u-tube is now just muddy rather than a lake, but the u-tube is still sumped, so the cave beyond HRC is still inaccessible to non divers.

Hoping by the end of month it'll be dry enough to dig out the slumped mud and regain the far end. Will update then.

Latest from the Daren camp last weekend (1st March 2025) - although the water level has fallen still further, allowing an amount of mud/silt/slurry to be dug out from the approach, the initial U-tube crawl remains entirely sumped and impassable. It is hoped that this will continue to drain naturally over time as the prospect of bailing it presents a few logistical challenges.

The water has now lowered enough that on last weekends Hard Rock digging camp members of the team were able to reopen the route to the Rock Steady Cruise. It is still wet and sloppy so a shovel has been left in case it slumps again. Now it's open the draught should dry the rest of the water out fairly quickly.

Trips beyond the Hard Rock Cafe are possible again! Please form an orderly queue.

Me and Adrian F did a day trip to Hardrock a few weeks back and have dug all the slop out of the u tube and it's nice and clear now, we also built a dam from rocks clay and wet sand at the lowest point at the camp area the first right hand passage going towards the sleeping area hopefully this is sufficient enough to stop the water getting further into the cave if water levels ever reach the hight of the last flood again, (Hopefully Not) 🙏 we also dug a channel for water around 8"/12" deep on the higher area just beyond the camp to potentially help it drain better ? We also did an end of cave Spaderunner / Updweeb trip Saturday just gone and everything beyond to the end of the cave is clear aswell, 👍
