DCRO Call Out to Eldon Hole

We are fortunate as this is a haul/ rescue that the team has rehearsed. After the discovery of very old human bones in the internal dig DCRO lowered and hauled some scientists in to/ out of Eldon hole.
Luckily some team members who were involved that day were available last night so could step up the same system, utilising the Larkin frame to get a good hang down the middle of Eldon.

Photos are not all mine! By Pete Knight, Tim Webber, Pete Dell and me.

Me and Beth, still happy at 2am. Both casualties out or on their way out and just waiting our turn to head for the surface

Well done all. But this does beg the question of why they were down there in the first place, if they didn't have the ability to climb out again. Did they give any clues as to why they couldn't get out? It's not like much of the trip is tiring up to that point.

I think both the "explorers" and rescuers (thanks DCRO, hope I never need you myself) were incredible to get down there. Checking https://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/Eldon_Hole it's bottomless. So to have got all the way down is an impossible achievement in itself 🤣.

I wonder if the leaders encouraged 2 untrained novices on the basis they could learn jumaring on the job... and discovered they couldn't. But confidentiality probably means not much more can be shared?

Getting down a bottomless shaft is easy. Eventually, you will come out the other side of the planet. Of course, getting from the centre to either end will need prussiking skills.

I am off to update the CCPC rigging guide with this new piece of information. A minimum 12,742,000m rope will be required for the Eldon through trip. That's going to need your biggest tackle bag and the walk in from the end of Eldon Lane is going to be tough for whoever draws the short straw to carry it.

Well if they could pass all the rebelays on the way down, it implies they're not complete novices. Very strange.
Complete novices to caving (but with climbing kit) who don't know about rope rub or rebelays might just throw a rope down and abseil?

To paraphrase Jim Eyre, anyone can slide down a rope!
Vertical caving looks easy, sounds easy, but gravity is a harsh mistress. The learning curve is steep! Hopefully the two concerned will learn and improve. I am sure many of us have had close calls in our early days.
It's only an epic if you miss the pub! 😁

Well done DCRO, another good outcome

Interesting double rope technique, doesn’t appear to be working very efficiently for the way down, not sure how it will fair on the way up!!!

Only started "climbing" 3 weeks ago, but then the poles are tough:

Call me a wimp, but if I was climbing err – messing about on ropes – in an old slate quarry I think I'd be wearing a helmet.
