Drill Bits

What drill bits are folk currently buying and where without spending crazy money?
I like the Bosch ones for capping but for longer 12mm holes at 600-1000mm length £50-£60 seems a lot to spend on a bit.
Recommendations and links gladly received!

That’s what I’ve been using actually!
Well let me know if you find anything better in that case! Someone bought a load of UK Drills bits for work - certainly cheap, but the quality was very poor. Had quite a few shanks shear off in the chuck!

I use Hilti TE-CX 8/27 and buy new off EBay at a fraction of Hilti's price. Work perfectly for capping and bolting. Particularly in the hard dolomite we have to drill through. And a very good lifespan.
Last batch I bought worked out at £18.40 each.
I have a few (4 to 5) too many, so if anybody would like some please DM me.

I've also found the 8.5mm are better for capping than 8mm as they just give that bit more wiggle room for the rod without it jamming, but is still tight enough to keep the force inside - and that sadly Hilti don't make them. But I've not had any issues so far with the ones shown above. For bolting with concrete screws it's always the Hilti 8mm TE-CX.

The other Pete Hall keeps a "calibrated" 8mm washer on his keyring that he can test against 8mm drill bits, as they are all slightly different tolerance.
If the bit fits through, he doesn't buy it, if it doesn't fit it's OK for capping.

I bought a bunch of different drill bits and tested them. The cutter width was pretty much the same with all of them. What seemed to make the most difference was the amount of side relief on the carbide insert. Less relief meant a rounder hole (better for capping).

For what it’s worth, we’ve found the Erbauer x-head bits to be excellent for capping. Good hole roundness, good price and reasonable quality.

For certain uses I'd recommend 10mm rather than 12mm. It works every time for me, no problem, and less drill power/battery life required. I too have started to use Erbauer (Screwfix's own brand I believe). They are cheaper, but also last much longer than same sized Bosch or Dewalt branded bits which snap all too quickly.

For capping, an 8.5mm bit is better for some types of caps such a proper Hiltis. The older, smaller bore types of caps, are still good in 8mm holes.

That's my 10 penneth :)

I have used this site extensively as it has 8.5 mm bits.
I've used dozens of these bits and they are really good value. I have found that sometimes some of them are a bit bent, from the last batch I bought about 6 out of 20 had a noticeable wobble which can make hole starting a bit more difficult and I think wastes a bit of impact energy. That said at the price, rejecting 6 from 20 still makes them good value compared to others.

Drill bit performance may depend on rock type.

In the Forest almost all cave is in dolomite and there is lots of haematite mineralisation (iron ore), which is extremely hard. (Redhouse is the exception where there are long sections of Crease which is beautifully white and much more like Yorkshire/Derbyshire)

I've compared the Erbauer (Screwfix) and Hilti TE-CX and the latter wins hands down. Drilling takes less than half the time.

For me, the trick with loading caps is to ensure the hole is thoroughly cleared of dust. I use 8mm pipe brushes and then use the same tool to push each (Hilti) cap in separately. I have no problems going to the full 270mm length of the bit.
