Earthquake overninght

Widely reported by here in South Wales. Heads of the Valleys area and as far away as Cardiff. One person said it woke them and others have said they thought a lorry must crashed into a nearby house!

We didn't notice a thing, despite lots of people in the village where we live talking about it on Facebook. We're actually disappointed! 😂

Off to OFD tomorrow, the land of falling boulders! :)

BGS map of the epicentre location. Reported as Brynmawr but the map shows it very near to Chartists Cave on Mynydd Llangynidr, at 3km depth.

Rickety boulders near Brynmawr? That's the OCAF entrance! I'll check it later.

The earthquake sounded like one loud bang outdoors at Tretower. Went out looking for a nearby RTA - nothing - not the wood burner exploding either.

CSS teams visited Agen Allwedd on Saturday, visiting Main Passage, Midnight Passage near Second Choke and some did the Grand Circle and no one reported any changes to the cave.

A couple of folks noticed the quake on Friday with one bod sleeping in his van thinking someone was messing about when it started rocking and another person claimed to feel the tremor. I failed to notice it.

Later reports suggest the quake was felt as far away as the Birmingham area. I think Mendip is nearer to the epicentre than Birmingham, so it might be worth bearing in mind if caving there too.

I was once woken by an earthquake while staying with my aged father in Worcs. (Dudley, 4.8 ) I woke up, thought "an earthquake!". rolled over and went to sleep again. It does occur to me that that wasn't the most sensible reaction. I had better not visit an area where earthquakes do real damage.

I didn't even check on my father.

I've been for a look. The giant dog-tooth is still in the roof. But it seems more has fallen from behind it making it more precarious. There is new debris on and around the scree pile just below the entrance, at least I think there is, and it's not clear if the earthquake dropped it or not. My attached photo is the situation on 26th Feb 2023. One taken in 2012 for comparison can be found here:

There is a new rock the size of a pressure cooker fallen out of the roof behind the hanging dog-tooth into my 'drainage channel'. Someone removed another fallen rock like this from pretty much the same place a month or so back.
