Eldon hole

Tried to go down Eldon hole this weekend only to be stopped by a cornice sticking out about 2-3m over the east face. This cornice was quite stable at the time (atatched to a SRT rope I jumped up and down on it) so could be around for a while. It hangs directly over where you must go in the lower part of the shaft and a conservative estimate is about 4-5 tonnes of snow.

Take a shovel.......

I remember a trip down Eldon Hole in the 80's. It was in the middle of a warm summer but there was still a lot of snow at the bottom of the open pot.

:eek:ldgit:

Yeah, same here - the first time I went down was late 80's and there's was about 6ft of snow/ice down the bottom.

PS - the bit up to the Sword of Damocles is well worth doing (it's a pull-thro) - it's a cool formation and there's a really weird window puzzle on the way - not a squeeze or anything but it made me get into some weird contortions...
