I last went up the filthy five a few months ago. Entirely depends upon your risk/reward ratio. The bolts and hangers are bad by most definitions and some are more of the homemade variety. Some of the hangers have a tendency to flex slightly when loaded. I put in some stainless maillons as these had almost entirely corroded (will include some pictures later). The ropes are very old but don't show much sign of ware for the most part, besides being very very muddy. Having said all of this, I've been up there three or four times in the last year when needed.Has anyone been to the filthy five pitches recently? Any info on condition of ropes etc?

I'd suggest that the filthy five should probably be avoided for the time being but it's entirely up to you
I reached out to the DCA earlier this year and they have agreed to add it to the rebolting list but will wait until st valentine's is open (the reason I went up ff in the first place) to do it.
Hope that info helps!
what with your hands lolWould love to pull test some of them and see what they fail at, if they've not all gone in the scrap pile by now.
I have made a portable 50kN testing rig for this kind of thing.what with your hands lol
I would be surprised if those maillons weren't pretty close to full strength (or at least close enough that they'd still be 'fine'). Bit of surface rust isn't a disaster; most of the metal is still there after all.

ah yes, under closer examination some of them do look pretty knackeredThe photo doesn't really do it justice to be fair. In some spots I'd guess that maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of the metal is still there from the original. Also some of the gates (what is the correct term for the spinny bit of the maillon?) have decided they wanted to be able to slide instead of spin so I'd imagine that would decrease strength quite significantly.
Hopefully they're still good for 5kn or so because that would make me feel better
Ollie.
Well we can find out exactly how bad they are at some point. The OP is going to fire them my way and I'll film the results from the pull tester and post something here.ah yes, under closer examination some of them do look pretty knackeredI must have just glanced at the ones that are slightly less bad.
And if the gate isn't screwing tight then they will be _massively_ weaker than the rating.
After speaking to SamT there's someone else who wishes to sort the sump out? We've got another three people who are also keen to get stuck in and help!
