Apparently the name of Conqueror was only given to him more recently. During his life he was William the Bastard, which was literally true.
My children, who are descended from him, call him William the Bastard.
Until the arrangement of the Land Registry web site was changed a few years ago, it was possible to deduce land boundaries with precision in rural areas without any cost by a rather tedious process of successive requests for details of what the Land Registry might want to sell you about any particular spot. This did not provide land ownership details but usually some details of the occupiers could be obtained from Google searches which would pick up Yellow Pages entries, planning applications, common grazing arrangements etc. I have found this process very useful in South Wales, but of course unregistered land just shows up as an empty area.Found this on the internet; may be of interest to cavers?
