Flood pulse in Kingsdale

There was a flood pulse in kingsdale this afternoon; here is a picture of the 'wave-front' advancing down the valley (at a rate estimated by timing and pacing as ~38 m per min).

I have some video 'footage' (if that's still an appropriate expression), but can't (yet) upload it on accounts of its
being too big; I'll try later (or maybe someone can advise me).

Woah! Was there  a  significant downpour in the area. Id like to know how many mm of rain over what time period caused that.
Suggest knocking on the door of the nearest teeneger in your street for advice on uploading to Youtube

That's pretty similar to the flood pulses we get in the Manifold Valley in the South Peak, except there the river bed is on average 10m wide and we can get 'wave-fronts' up to a metre high carrying tree trunks with them! 

Darfar Pot near Wetton Mill (60m deep) can fill up to river bed level in 20 mins. I've seen it happen, quite scary! Good job we've got a top entrance now. (10m above river bed.)

Interesting. Similar thing happened on Saturday. The beck was dry as we drove to above Kingsdale Head at around 9am, in rain. We came back down the valley at about 12 noon and stopped at Keld Head to watch this trundle down the valley;

Yup, seen one of those in Kingsdale Beck about 25 years ago - fortunately as we got changed, so we could alter out route for the day. Recollect it moved at a very fast walking pace / slow trot - we followed it for a few hundred metres.

Well worth seeing - sharpens the instincts for checking the weather forecast very closely, and to be aware of the risk of sharp showers on limited upper parts of a catchment which can affect an otherwise dry lower part of a catchment.

I had a bimble through the Churns and Borrins moor today.While in Borrins there was a considetable rise in water levels.Incredile considering it was 'only' drizzling.Water suddenly changed colour from clear running to muddy.

Well, as Skippy remarks, there didn't seem to be very heavy rain, though it could have been sloshing it down on the higher ground where we had not been; but from the evidence, it looked as though the flood was caused by persistent relatively light rain.

As for Skippy's remarks about the Churns; friends of ours were down Diccan, and apparently had quite an 'interseting' de-rigging session!

On Saturday, most of the water that later flowed in Kingsdale, came from Cluntering Gill, which was quite dramatic.

This is a very interesting and incredibly useful topic - you've given valuable up-to-the-minute information of special interest to cave divers which is actually more helpful than what's on the CDG VisBot page, as I type.)

Could I just mention that I think the farmer may not be keen on people going to the spots where those images were taken from without permission - and they're in view of the farm. I realise that when a sudden opportunity arises to take such useful photos there isn't really time to go and ask permission first but the presently fragile access to Keld Head for divers could be compromised if we're not careful. People with no direct interest in diving might not realise this, so really, all I'm saying is, just try and be sensitive to it; thanks.

I was down Meregill (below 3rd pitch, I think, in a party of 3) many years ago when it started to flood. That was in very light rain, but perhaps heavier higher up, very scary, we basically had to self-rescue cos one of the team was insufficiently dressed and got very cold. Took us quite a while as we hadn't rigged the ropes out of the water, lesson learnt...
