I'm probably the only one who didn't know this as it has been around for a couple of years, but just in case... The IGN have made their 1:25000 maps (and much more) available for free on portable telephones. See https://www.ign.fr/telechargez-application-cartographique-cartes-ign.

A pity our OS don't offer something as good and as cheap.

That's different - this service came out a couple of years ago. And it's free.

I sometimes use the free 'Standard' maps available with the OS app for when I don't have a downloaded (paid for) version. I used this last year when walking on Naxos in the Aegean and it was surprisingly good showing contours, a lot of paths and other details (eg our route up Mt Zas and down past the Zas Cave). Easier to use than the paid for map that Ali had taken. I've also used it on home ground.

The IGN full website site is superb. You can turn on geological map and hydrology layers. (From memory) It will also allow you to import gpx/kml files and overlay therion/survex output directly on the layered map.

I have just had my yearly subscription renewal notice for the full service and they are putting up the price from £10.99 to £17.99 this time.
That seems a bit steep to me!
I have cancelled it and will now just use the almost as good free service linked above. The only real difference for me is that you can't use the free app on a desk PC. However, when in France I only have my phone and iPad so not worth £17.99 just for a little bit of pre-holiday planning at home. Just have to do it on the iPad!
