Gaping Gill - BPC May

Aye up

A mate and I were / are planning on coming up to GG this Saturday but I suddenly realised that this is not actually the open week. Can I assume we are OK to access the system but that not all the routes may be rigged? More than happy to volunteer to rig some bits if needed.

Can anyone from BPC advise?

Thanks

How do, BPC member here! You can come up, most routes are rigged at this point. I know I’m previous years the policy has been to report to the winch before heading underground, and let them know your plans!
Happy caving

Thank you very much to the BPC for giving us a friendly welcome and letting us use the rigging…..especially as I am fairly sure it was a members only week?!

We were asked to sign in at the winch and did so, got some info on bits and pieces, stashed some bags and headed off.

No matter how many times I see it, the main chamber is spectacular when floodlit.
Belting day out.

Please could I just check, are Marilyn or Bar Pot rigged?
And is it possible to do a trip during this week before the main meet starts?

Thanks.

Both Marilyn and Bar are rigged, also Small Mammal and SE Aven. Yes, you are welcome to use our ropes this week. However there is only a skeleton crew up here and the winch won't be running. For this week only, please make your own call-out arrangements.

P.S. please take extreme care on the Niagra pitch in Marilyn, there are several reports of loose and falling rocks. Anyone below should stay well back down the passage.

It's been like that since it was opened up. There's a wall of debris at the top of the pitch which is being dried by the draught now coming from the entrance. The outer face of the debris dries off, drops, and then the cycle repeats.

Definitely only one person at a time in the line of fire on Niagra pitch. Even accidentally touching the debris wall knocks stuff off.

Hi all - this will be my first time caving in GG during the Winch Meet - the plan was to make a through trip, in through Stream and out Marylin this weekend. Would this work? Any advice on when's best to arrive/where to park for the walk up the fell if Clapham is deleteriously busy?

Caving wise that would be fine, please report to the winch tent to let them know what your plan is and to leave a call out there. Parking and walking up may well be busy from Clapham…
