Hi fellow cavers,

As you may have heard, this year’s Gaping Gill Winch Meet will be a pre-booked event.

Winching Dates are 8th - 15th August 2025

Tickets will go on sale from 1st July, and will only be available through the CPC website:

Please be aware that any offers of tickets from third-party outlets or secondary sellers are scams and should be avoided.

If you’d like to use the winch to descend for a caving trip, we recommend booking as soon as possible—tickets are expected to sell out quickly.

For those caving in via other entrances and who are unable to exit a rigged pitch there will be limited opportunities to return via the winch, for a £10 cash fee. This option is not suitable for large groups, and we ask for your patience as we will prioritise members of the public in these cases.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the cost of a winch descent has increased to £30 this year.

As in previous years, the main “trade” entrances will be rigged—and we hope to have some of the less “trade” ones rigged as well. Suitably experienced cavers are very welcome to make use of these free of charge.

We will share more details on this aspect closer to the time.

We hope to see lots of cavers at Gaping Gill this year!

Kind regards,

Ian Patrick

Despite the tickets not yet being on sale, there's already been one scam posting on Facebook offering 4 tickets because "my hubby is on call for work and wasn't able to get it covered".

Do you know when the trade routes will be rigged from? I’m guessing a few days before the winch opens?
Cheers.

Hi Stevie

There will be something available from midday on Monday 4th August IF all goes to plan and the weather plays ball.
(Dihedral will be the first to go in as we use that to access the chamber to connect the guide wire).
I will update here in “real time” as best I can.

Cheers
Ian

Mention of digging buckets brought to mind that we often have a full bucket on the rope on its way up, one bucket at the bottom being filled and an empty bucket at the top waiting to be swapped with the one coming up. We could shave 1 minute off the 3 minutes round trip time if we had two more chairs and a quick release mechanism to swap them over at the top and bottom.

What could possibly go wrong ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How come Saturday is starting an hour earlier than rest?
The weekends always have being an 8.00am start. I assume the early slot on Sunday is pre booked for club use, or there is a BIG surprise party on the Saturday night 😃.

I’m planning a quick trip down Bar to main chamber late afternoon today. Does anyone know if it’s been rigged ahead of the winch meet? (Rather lazily want to avoid carrying ropes up if we don’t need to). Cheers.
