Gautries hole - the extensions

Who: Myself (freelance), Oggy (DCC)
Where: Gautries Hole, Peak district
When: Wednesday 15th August 2012

After an aborted trip a couple of months back due to the entrance series being sumped, we returned in earnest to have a poke around, a first time trip to Gautries for the two of us.

We hadn't a clue where we were going as we like to have an air of exploration to our caving, the only real knowledge we had was that it was going to be a tight, crawly, muddy trip. Our follow your nose ethos took us around the majority of the cave, having now studied the (out of date) survey, we missed nuns chuff and the other side of the plughole in the first chamber.

We had a look at the sump below angle chamber, negotiated the muddy duck and found the water washed passage revealed by the Eldon. This was followed to a sump and small passages just past the sump. Returning from the sump, we climbed a seemingly pointless knotted rope up a blind aven and tried a very tight body sized tube - this had a very tight 's bend' that was rather tricky to negotiate being 6' 2" followed by an even tighter vertical tube that had been banged. This was getting daft, so I turned back.

Missing the way back to pool chamber, we started going steeply up dip, grovelling up a very gravelly tube, swimming through some aquatic passage until finding the worst dive base in Derbyshire. The water looked inviting, but we left that one for another day.

Plugging the plug hole on the way out enabled us to flood the first chamber and have a much needed wash! We pulled the plug before leaving and heading to the Wanted for a swift pint.

Awesome that you had a good look around. I have to say it's all a little difficult to follow, but it sounds like you saw most of it. The S-bends to a tight vertical section sounds like Nun's Chuff backwards from the other side of Plug Sump, but who knows! Past Worse Dive Base you missed out on Poundland, a true classic.

Anyone been back to pull the plug yet? Several years of water being diverted down the extensions according to the latest info on the EPC website. Sounds like the plug was buried. Maybe accessible now given the dry spell?

Been on the 9th July with some EPC guys but it was still sumped at the entrance. May be a short duck but we opted for P8 instead.

Wouldn't mind trying again some time soon?!

Yer and it was dived a couple weeks later by Tweb. He tried to dig the plug out but couldn't find it. Might need lifting from the underside!?
