Geoff Yeadon RIP

Don't think I have ever met him, which is shame, I know he was a big name in the caving world though, discovered Aquamole and was involved in exploring a lot of the earlier caves in Matienzo. Such sad news to loose one of the greats.

Very sad news.

I caved with Geoff both in the Dales and in Mulu and really enjoyed his company. He had a lovely way of being light hearted in the most serious of circumstances. His achievements, particularly with his cave diving are, of course, legendary. But for him, he was simply curious and determined.

He was a wonderful man wrapped up with a warm blanket of humility.

A sad loss

A huge loss, as well as his understated competence, Geoff was one of the funniest people I knew in the caving world, as I was reminded when reading Pooh’s book. I still grin at the memory of him and Lindsey Dodd appearing from our Mulu Long House wearing every item of clothing they possessed to ensure no square millimetre of skin was available to biting insects. Totally unnecessary but very funny.

I'm proud to have known Geoff since he was a schoolboy introduced to caving by the legendary Dave Heap in the early 1960's. Geoff was an inspiration to so many.

So very sorry to hear that Geoff Yeadon had passed away suddenly. A titan in his field of cave diving who paved the way for many others. A lovely, generous man, whose modesty belied his massive achievements. He was loved by all and will be missed by many. RIP Geoff.

I wish I'd met him. Everything I heard about him was so positive, and so inspiring. In a rather small community, losing a legend leaves a big gap.

Just had a phone call from his brother John bearing these sad tidings. Am shocked beyond words. He did all our plumbing work years ago - we have happy memories of overhearing him talking to himself after each knotty challenge was overcome. "Well done me!" The most amazing man. Such a loss to us all. 🥹

I very much doubt such a film would be made now, and of course it's brilliant - an evocation of a time, place, and subculture, as well as being a gripping record of an extraordinary and challenging triumph. I tried to interest two national newspapers in an article about Geoff and his amazing life yesterday. No takers.

You could try Radio 4 Last Words (think that's the name) They did Jim Eyre a few years back.
