Ghyll House / Gill House near Mossdale

Myself and other CPC members spent some time digging in Gill House Pot back in the 90s. I first explored Gill House Pot one night in1967. The house was still occupied then as there were lights on, and we were minded not to set off any dog's barking as our's was a clandestine trip. I have no recollection of ever seeing any signs, suggestive of pubs or otherwise.

This was Gill House (near Mossdale) in Nov. 2006.

That's just the small building on the right (photo from craven herald article, taken before it was demolished in 1993, but I don't know when Thomas Joy moved out, it only says he died at age of 75 in 1982)

Thomas Joy moved out of Gill House in about 1936. Thereafter, despite being the shepherd for the gate holders on Grassington Moor, he lived in a cottage in Grassington. After his retirement he used to make stone troughs and shepherd's crooks.

I have an old diary note that a few of us had a trip into Mossdale on 22nd Sept 1963 and I remember asking permission to camp at Gill House. It was occupied then and there was a fierce dog in a shed.

Yes - it was inhabited, but not by Thomas Joy. I refer you to "Mostly Joy", published by Galena Books. ISBN: 978 0 9934923 5 8
