I think the 'pot' part of the name may refer to a hollow rather than an actual cave/pothole? There are other examples, the most obvious that springs to my mind is Crackpot Hall, the ruined farmhouse on the C-to-C route near Keld. I did walk past Mirk Pot on a walk around the Snaizeholme dale about 12 years ago but don't remember seeing the reds. It was cold (snowed up on the fell) so they might have been laying low. The nearest caves I'm aware of are some way off by the Pennine Way up on Dodd Fell (Heator Hole and some minor pots in the Main Limestone).

There is a cave. Though it has been sealed for at least 60 years after a previous owner lost a dog down it

Do you have any details - a name perhaps? My copy of 'Pennine Underground' (1959) is difficult to search through as there are no maps for areas beyond the classic Three Peaks region.

As far as i know it is called Mirk Pot. It is just possible that what i know is made up but i know where the mouth of the 'cave' is. I did hear that some famous historical caver had written about it in positive terms but again this may be fantasy
