Harry Long (1940 - 2026)

Harry died in a care home at the end of May after a few years of failing health. During his time as part of the Matienzo Expeditions he used his speleological expertise to scour the hillsides finding a number of significant caves.

Very sorry to hear about this. I only met him once in the eighties when we were digging in Dentdale and he did some blasting for us. He was very knowledgeable about the area as you'd expect of one of the guidebook authors.

Harry was one of the first people I got to know when I joined UWFRA 25 years ago.....I wasnt even a caver back then.

But we did share working life that involved culverts and the like

This is sad news. I first met Harry in about 1969, and was proud to know him. Quite apart from being a fine Jazz player, his contribution to British caving in his exploration work, his guide book work, and his work for so many years with the UWFRA, made him stand out. He was also one of nature's gentlemen, and always a pleasure to talk to.

Does anyone know if Harry's recent book is still available? Like many things I didn't get round to buying a copy when it came out.
