HIDDEN EARTH 2025:
Cave Archaeology in Britain - new discoveries​

Last year we ran a very successful workshop exploring collaboration and communication between everyone involved and interested in cave archaeology. One of the planned outcomes from that discussion was that we should run a regular session at Hidden Earth to showcase new archaeological discoveries from caves.

HIDDEN EARTH 2025:
Redhouse Lane Swallet Extensions​

At Hidden Earth 2024 we reported a breakthrough into a major system extending the original cave from 1.6km to 4km. Since that time the system has been extended to the south, north and north-west. The extremities of these passages extend from the northern limit of Slaughter Stream Cave to almost the River Wye, passing under known cave in the Mailscot Valley.

Shepton Mallett Caving Club is embarking on a 3,000km recon trip in Thailand's southern peninsular, surveying over six km of ornate Buddhist temple caves. The journey ends with the first known exploration by western cavers of the 'Pig Palace Cave'. Updates on recent finds, typical cave fauna, and a new species of cave gecko will also be shared.

Tasmania: Exploration Efforts in Australia's Deepest Cave System​

Australia's North Tasmania hosts highly-decorated caves filled with huge speleothems and gour pools. However, the southwest's Junee-Florentine karst system holds the exploration potential, housing Niggly cave, Australia's deepest and muddiest. Despite significant obstacles, recent exploration led by the Southern Tasmanian Caverneers revealed exciting new discoveries.

Hidden Earth 2025:
Buda Believers: new caves in Sarawak, Malaysia​

This July, an expedition heads back to Gunung Buda National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia, targeting the less-explored Northern region - Assam Hills for potential new caves. The lead comes from an ambiguous 2003 American expedition report. A notable challenge will be camping in the jungle without a nearby river. Adventure awaits and this could prove to be a major find.

Hidden Earth 2025:
Resurveying and discoveries in the Coolagh River Cave: Recent UBSS Ireland expeditions​

In the past decade, the UBSS has been focusing on caving expeditions in Ireland, particularly within systems in County Clare such as the Coolagh River Cave. They've been utilizing modern surveying techniques to revise and update data, resulting in more detailed surveys and newfound discoveries. A planned talk will delve into the experiences and challenges encountered on these expeditions. The exhausting but rewarding work in the Coolagh River Cave is something not to be missed.

ICCC Slovenia Expedition - Nova Meja​

Imperial College Caving Club has made significant progress in System Migovec, Slovenia. Utilising a large boulder chamber, they have established a camp 'Sparkle' using hammocks while retaining last year's camp 'Hallelujah' as a rest-stop/introductory camp. Interestingly, they rediscovered Salome Viados, a series of chambers which haven't been explored for nearly two decades, and there's evidence suggesting potential for a new entrance.

Hidden Earth 2025:
Jungles, Tin Mines, and Marble Caves: Exploring Peninsular Malaysia’s Forgotten Underground​

A caving expedition in February 2025 explored northern Peninsular Malaysia, yielding a diverse spectrum of caves, from marble ones on tropical islands to colonial-era tin mines. They surveyed more than 11 km of cave passages, with Gua Baba being the longest one at 3.5 km. This was achieved through international collaboration, including rangers, climbers, and cave enthusiasts from multiple countries. The key areas explored and future potential will be discussed at the upcoming conference.

Hidden Earth 2025:
Gower's newest cave, Ogof New Park. A 2024 film of its discovery and a science report.​

Less than a year ago, North Gower's newest cave, Ogof New Park, was discovered, revealing an exciting 1/2 km of both challenging and unique passages. The 40-minute film documenting the cave's discovery and ongoing exploration has already been well-received by local communities. Furthermore, this new cave certainly differs from other Gower caves, sparking numerous developmental questions and increasing our understanding of the local karst area. The conference will feature a presentation explaining the scientific discoveries about Gower's geology and its glacial margin location during the late Devensian Glacial period.

Hidden Earth 2025:
Spectacular finds as Draughting Hole and Missed Pot enter English top ten​

The Draughting Hole – Missed Pot system has made it to the top ten longest caves in England, currently spanning over 10km. The north west of the cave revealed well-decorated chambers as part of the 8000ers series. Now in its 33rd year, The Caving in the Abode of the Clouds Project in Meghalaya, NE India has charted 22.7kms of new passages including a new river cave named Lungchung Khur. From its inception in 1992, the project has covered an impressive total of 574km. Hear about the expedition’s ups and downs, and ponder over why 'Lucy' is often termed as a Meghalaya Caver's best friend.
