Greenland Caves Project 2023: Exploration of WUL-8, Wulff Land, North Greenland

22 - Greenland Caves Project 2023 - UKC.jpg

30 minute lecture by Gina Moseley

A much-anticipated exploration of the Greenland Caves Project 2023 finally came to fruition as an experienced team descended into 'WUL-8', a cave in North Greenland discovered during the Cold War. After landing by helicopter and abseiling down a cliff face, the team documented their exploration amidst challenging weather conditions. Despite being bound to base camp on several occasions, they explored and documented additional caves in the region, contributing significantly to our knowledge of one of the earth's northernmost karst areas.

At Hidden Earth, we'll explore how the Gay Outdoor Club Caving Group evolved from a casual group into some serious cave explorers, tackling caves like Otter Hole and Ghar Parau, and even launching expeditions in Russia and New Zealand. However, despite the club’s growth, the caving group has been inactive for a while. Could this be due to the LGBTQ+ community feeling accepted in other caving clubs?

Scientific Investigations in Greenland’s Caves: Unlocking High Arctic Climate Histories

28 - Scientific Investigations in Greenland - UKC.jpg

30 minute lecture by Gina Moseley

Learn more about the findings of the Greenland Caves Project that has been exploring the High Arctic caves in Greenland since 2015. The limestone cave systems including sites in Kronprins Christian Land and Wulff Land offer clear records of climate variations dating back to 5 to 15 million years ago. The investigations have focused on U-Pb dating, stable isotope geochemistry, trace element analysis, and petrography, giving us unique insights into paleohydrology, permafrost dynamics, and past atmospheric circulation. These caves serve as critical climate archives, giving us a unique perspective on high-latitude climate variability.
