I think the way this thread has degenerated typifies what puts people off UKcaving.  I want this site to be the place for news, information, respectful discussion and help for those who ask for it - for all cavers.  The article on Dinah Rose had already been sent to me by caving friends so I put it on here for general interest.  Other users of this forum also seem to have found it of interest.

Hmmm.....

In response to the original quote used.
I think being governed by the proprietors of this site is what will put more people off. The general interference that has occurred since this site changed hands has been quite significant, compared to how it was before and frankly very annoying!..

I'm curious as to how you see this 'interference'. Granted, it has changed slightly, but I take the input from the proprietors as general encouragement and enthusiam for caving/supporting the community. Especially for the less experienced and those looking for help. Is this not a good thing?

Has it changed?

But then I normally ignore the petty back biting threads so I guess I'll never know.............

Actually, is is on thread, demonstrating my latest lamp often produces this reaction.
But could equally be applied to a Stop V Rack debate or anything.

If we extrapolate it fully it would be the ultimate pointless Windows message.

or in VBA

Dim msg As String
msg = "Hmmm"

MsgBox msg, vbExclamation, "Caving Possibilities 2015"

I need professional help

More than anything I just feel users of this site are being talked down to a little. Locking troublesome threads is one thing, preaching to folk about what is expected or what the desired course is for the site is another. The users of ukcaving make it what it is, not those dictating how they want it to be. It's a forum after-all first and foremost and has been this way for a longtime. Why wreck something that works by attempting to make radical overnight changes to it - even if they are just suggestions.
I have long contributed material to this site and have always happily & freely done so, but i am actually questioning whether i want to continue doing this - due mainly to the fact I suddenly feel I am promoting the success of someone else's property come pet project. Bubba (Mike if i recall) who i assume was the former owner never really interfered unless it was absolutely necessary and allowed the members as individuals to aid the evolution of the forum.

Simon, IIRC, Bubba was actually the previous owner but one. That you didn't notice that change of ownership is interesting, don't you think?

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

The forum has a different 'feel' to it, certainly. I suspect the previous neutral stance to certain topics is no longer extant, and we shall see if the new 'calmer' UKC is more popular with forum users and sponsors.

I like the way the forums headed.

I've noticed the new owners prefer some threads to others, but they're human. They don't shut them down. They are allowed to complain about threads.

We all complain about some threads. This itself is a thread moaning about the owners!

Why doesn't everyone put the tinfoil hats away and just use this free service rather than moaning about aspects of it?

Something something, you can?t please all of the people all of the time etc. Which I suppose gets amplified when you have serial grumpsters.

And if you are in the majority, ah147, then the Forum will thrive. It will get paying sponsors, have up-to-date BIG news, photos, trip reports.

If not, it'll be a couple of dozen people talking to themselves and be an irrelevence to the general caving world.

And that would be a waste.

I agree with you literally, but not with the sentiment I'm reading, but maybe I'm reading into it too much.

Many people before these owners stayed away, lurked once in a while.

You are, and you are not alone in that.

I read somewhere that 75% of communication is non-verbal: inflexion, poise, facial features etc. So any debate on a Forum is effectively lacking a major communicative input. So I guess it's inevitable.

My public apologies then.

Again though, I haven't noticed anything actually bad about what the new owners are doing.

They might be publically post that they dislike a comment/thread, but again, we all do.

When they start locking threads unnecessarily or banning users arbitrarily or for having a differing opinion, that's when I'll start to have a problem. But thus far? I like the changes they are trying to make.

The mods are a different story, and have been through several owners...
