How to disturb bats, US style

Not sure what the law is regarding disturbing bats in the USA but if this video was taken in the UK there'd be hell to pay!

Just sat and watched it, and yes, it is compelling viewing and sad too.

I encounter bats quite often over here in West Wales as part of my job as a tree surgeon and as a part time helper with the West Wales and Mid Glamorgan bat groups. We quite often find large nursery clusters and roosts, but rarely on this kind of scale.
Cap 'n chris is absolutely right, if that had happened over here, there would have been hell to pay!

We do encounter some landowners, who, out of pure ignorance to the species will 'evict' them from barns or outbuildings, but never on the scale shown in this video! very sad.

To be honest - it looks to me like an infestation.

I'm not suprised they were disturbed, US style.

A bit drastic to say the least,totaly unessesary to destroy the roof like that.
Where it is allowed only,brass band music played loud and long near the roost would have
shifted them.

And yet the gov't tries to pin WNS deaths on us cavers - one of the few groups who works to /protect/ bats. And its been shown WNS is not caver's fault at all. And yet....people like that go without blame. Its very disheartening.

In fact there is increased vandelizm in our caves here. Cavers listen to the rules even though we hate them, and stay out of caves that we are required to state out of despite the stupidity of the cave closures. But that just leaves it wide open to the lawless...they are finding during bat counting spraypant (included spraypanted bats), the largest hibernaculum of the endangered gray bat was found and seems to have been disturbed, etc etc etc. Because the lawless took over...no one is there to protect anymore. We aren't allowed to.

...and yet, shit like that video is allowed.

No protection for bats in South Carolina either.
So these will probably be ousted in a similar fashion to those in Miami.

As unfortunate as this is for the bats, these are not innocuous British species. They are Brazilian free-tails, Tadarida brasiliensis, which have a strong and penetrating odour - pretty much impossible to share a house with them.  The species also has a high incidence of rabies prevalence - around 1% - which makes them a significant public health hazard if one has a few hundred under one's roof.
