Hull Pot Survey

Hi All, Does anyone have any information or survey about the natural cave at the bottom of the (bloody large) hull pot, if there is any? I have found scraps of information on this forum but can't find any survey or info, nor on the CNCC website.

There is a survey in the book Underground Adventure.

Try BCRA Bulletin 15, February 1977, pages 7-8 and survey. This is the best survey you're likely to find as it also includes the "Dead Fish Crawl" extension which is normally the downstream sump.

If your club doesn't have a caving library you could ask Mary Wilde to scan it for you in the British Caving Library. Email her at cavelibrarian@gmail.com. I think she goes there most Wednesdays.

There is also a chapter about it in the Adventures Underground book (either edition) published by Wild Places Publishing. This is a more recent book than the classic Underground Adventure book which Fulk quite rightly suggests above. The trip through the ducks and down the big pitch is an interesting and very aqueous excursion!

Thank you both! I'll have a dig through the clubs library. The idea would be to try it when the weather is a bit dryer (well more like near-drought), as I have read the downstream pitches are very flood prone.

Has anyone gone down there somewhat recently, and can report the condition/location of whatever bolts may be there? (As there are no official CNCC ones)

Hiya, I went down Hull Pot last week on the two bolts where the waterfall goes down. Bolts look good but I backed it up with a nut. The rope rubs on the edge a bit. Climbed out with trad gear up the vdiff. There are some dead sheep down there and a bit of litter. I wish I’d taken a carrier bag down to collect some of it. Pics attached

There are also some bolts above the rift descent at the south east end of the surface hole. I'm sure this used to be considered a free climb but when I looked at it recently the walls seemed extremely polished and greasy so I decided not to risk it. Well worth taking tackle. (The pitch there is only about 8 metres.)

'Fraid I've no information about any fixed aids above the big pitch. Last time we were down there we had to use natural belays but they were far from ideally located.
