The Institute for Controlled Speleogenesis (John Becker/WROT Studio and Geoff Manaugh/BLDGBLOG, 2014 | 2024) explores the design and operation of an experimental facility for generating artificial caves in limestone at a variety of spatial scales. The facility relies on an environmentally stable rock-dissolving acid mix, no more toxic than ammonia, applied through an underground network of drip-irrigation lines, storage bladders, and surface injection-arrays. The resulting caverns can then be used for studying and generating novel medicines, including speleo-pharmaceuticals; developing high-density underground agricultural systems; testing recreational caving gear; and prototyping new technologies for subterranean navigation, communication, and mapping.

An interesting art project from 2014, now expanded with some new generative AI images.

Still nothing on what the Templeton diggers get up to.

I watched Jurassic Park again yesterday which is a stark warning of what can go wrong when you try to 'control' nature. What happens if the controlled cave formation gets out of control? We'll be disappearing down a black hole of our own making!

One of the more accessible caves to use has considerable formations right inside the entrance. It's neat to go in the winter time, and see the formations frozen and covered in clear ice. It gives a nice preview to what the cave will look like as the formations grow in time.
