Ireby Fell footpath - volunteers needed!

Andrew Hinde is leading a working party to repair the footpath and bridges to Ireby Fell from Masongill Lane, and we need a few more volunteers. February 24th for preference with a fallback date of March 4th. It should be a fun day in the open air with the added bonus of the satisfaction of making a real difference to cavers with an access path and bridges that should last for at least 20 years. There will be a lot of humping around of slabs and heavy timbers. PM me if you'd like to be part of this.

Lots of likes, but no-one has actually come forward to volunteer. We need about another 3 people

Hi Kay, I appreciate you might want to leave weekends free so individuals can play out with their friends, but perhaps the logistics of the volunteers getting to the Dales needs reconsidering. e.g. I will be in the Dales for a club event on the 21st, if I volunteered to repair the footpath, I would be returning home on the Sunday after the club event, only to be driving up again on the Tuesday. At 1.0-1.5 hours each way, that is a lot of driving. Wouldn't it be better to hold the event on a Friday or Monday making a long weekend for those who are not fortunate to live in the Dales. Just a thought.

The choice of date has to be with the team leader, without whom no work can take place! It's not always on a Tuesday or Wednesday. It is usually a weekday, because when I've tried weekends, it has been difficult to get volunteers, probably because there's more exciting things to do at weekends.

A good day today. Vegetation cleared back from the sides of the slabs, all the slabs lifted and re-set level. Three "bridges" put in over gullies.

Thank you to all the volunteers who turned up and our Conservation Officer, Kay, for arranging this. We'd also like to acknowledge Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust for their funding contribution to this and several of our other recent projects.

AlanW has already posted some nice photos of the end result, but for completion, here is our project report with a few more details:
