John Maneely's Gear

Hi Guys
John's family have asked if I would mind dealing with some of his caving/cave diving gear and books. They were unsure of what to do with it all and it was taking up space in the garage, so I offered to identify some of it (some of it takes a bit of identifying !!) and we agreed on a fair way of finding it all new and appreciative homes in the caving/cave diving world which we know John would want, rather than consigning it to a skip or ebay.
John's younger sister and very close friend, Dany, ran the Berlin Marathon on the day John died in the Doubs and she is running the London marathon in his memory, raising money for the RNLI - a cause to which John contributed monthly by Direct Debit.
Over the next couple of days (I'll get as much done today as I can)I will sort through the stuff and list on here items which may be of use to people. A donation to the RNLI, worthy of the item (especially books) is all we ask in return.
Donations can be made via Dany's fundraising page :

http://www.justgiving.com/danymaneely

Or send a cheque made payable to the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution)to me at :
17 Avon Terrace
Salisbury
SP2 7BT

I have a rough idea of the value of items, so only sensible offers/donations please. You will still get a bargain !! To claim an item, simply drop me an email christine_grosart at yahoo dot co dot uk or give me a call 07815 316681.
I'll hold the item/s for you until the donation is received and I will endeavour to get the item/s to you, trying to avoid P&P where possible.
If anybody oop north would like anything, please make your claim before next thursday 29th jan as I'll be leaving for the Dales the next day and can ferry stuff up with me.
Items to follow - It is first come first served, unless I think an offer is too cheap ;-)
There are some items which have no monetary value, but need good homes - these will be marked RHP (re-home please !!!)

Remeber, I'm away all day tomorrow so don't expect a relpy til tomorrow night - and don't call me during the day cos I'll be on the Thames.....somewhere.....in a canoe......
Chris

Hi guys
I'm back from paddling a very choppy Thames - damn bloody rowers.........
Anyway, back online and on the phone to continue raising a bit of cash for John and Dany's cause - well over the ?300 mark now, good effort everyone !

Hi Christine

This is sort of related......

I have a partly filled RNLI collection box from my old centre which needs to be emptied or given back to the RNLI (I no longer have a public office so its redundant)

Can I pass this to you or next time I'm near a lifeboat station just take it in?

Hmmm, tricky one... :-\

Have to say I don't know - I think whoever dropped the collection box off is meant to collect it - but if they haven't then.......
What I would do (which isn't necessarily the right thing ??!!) is take the cash to a bank and ask them to take it off your hands and write a cheque for the RNLI on your behalf. And they can count it for you as well  ;D
If anyone else has any better ideas, I'd go with them.....

Failing that, a post office may be less awkward..........

Chris

p.s I'll put an updated list of gear up in a second............

Hi everyone
Any last minute requests, please email me before 6pm tonight and I'll chuck it in the car for Mendip/Northern delivery.

This seems like a good opportunity to thank everybody who has donated to this cause in return for John's items of caving related gear. His family are so pleased that it has all gone to good homes where he will live on, wherever his gear takes it's new owners - even as far afield as Ireland. We are even more pleased that you guys have raised in excess of ?550 for Dany's marathon run and a charity which John thought very highly of. It wasn't the easiest job to sort through his gear and thankyou for all the generous support and messages of encouragement.
There is still some stuff left - the Cave Diving Group message bopard list is up to date as of today. The rucksacks could really do with new homes....one may be a bit bigger than 35 litres....they take up an awful lot of space.....any offers ??
Chris

Hi Chris

May I hijack one post of your thread to ask something? I have a DVD featuring John made by one of his WCMS diver colleagues which was made on a dive a while back, underground in Surrey. I have permission to copy this DVD for anyone who is interested in a copy - I have already made this offer to WCMS members, but there is no reason why others should not also have one if they want. I am thinking of making a modest charge for it, and donating the balance of the takings to charity after paying for disks and postage. I am happy for it to go to whatever charity the family choose. Shall we add the funds raised to the RNLI contribution?

Hi
That would be great - I certainly wouldn't mind a copy ! I think the RNLI would be suitable as we're trying to secure Dany's place in the marathon run and it was John's chosen charity. I think the RNLI have fished a few of his mates out the big blue wobbly thing over the years as well........
I came across (by accident) some film of John preparing to dive the Doubs on the weekend he died and this was a bit of a shock to the system as I didn't know it existed. I think some film of happier memories would be nice.
Cheers
Chris
p.s found a home for the rucksacks

Hi All
Just a quickie to say a big THANKYOU on behalf of the Maneely family. You have helped raise over ?600 for John's gear and Dany has raised, with your help, over ?3,500 for the RNLI !! So well done and thankyou !! Don't forget to cheer her on in the London Marathon !!
:clap2:
Christine
