If you park at Yordas and take the path over towards Heron you pass two strange enclosures. They seem to have some sort of ground monitoring equipment in them. Curious as to what they are.

It might be something to do with this?
YDNPA FiPL project
"To quantify and understand the carbon and biodiversity benefits associated FiPL is contributing to a biodiversity quality index audit. This unique report will inform how the ecosystems are functioning and recovering by measuring 7 different aspects of biodiversity quality and ecosystem integrity. This will highlight opportunities for alternative income for the farm"

There’s a similar set on the west side of Ingleborough - can’t remember exactly where, but it was on the walk between great douk and sunset

I can't quite see what the instruments are but perhaps it's an investigation into soil saturation levels, transportation, permeablility or sommat like that?

There is a stack more of those wooden frames piled up by the wall. The fence is electrified. There are lots of 'kebab stick' markers around the four sensor holes. There appears to be a plastic liner or some such thing buried around the sensors, about the same size as the wooden frames. Probably the FiPL thing as Emsy says. Interesting though.

35 year project on the peat bogs in that area
1000018438.png

"Our purpose is to rehabilitate the land through peat restoration, tree planting and careful management to restore the delicate natural balance, thereby increasing biodiversity and carbon sequestration. We are measuring the effects through monitoring and want to demonstrate that it is possible to have sustainable land management (both environmentally and financially) that can allow others to follow a similar path. We are committed to regular monitoring and sharing outputs and experiences to share with other land managers."

That looks as though someone's installed downlighting - although what could possibly be under there is anyone's guess :dig:
