Lamp module request

Bit of a long shot this.

John Biffin, of Little Monkey / Rude Nora etc lamp manufacturing, used to make a replacement lamp module that fits the Underwater Kinetics Mini Q 40 torches (the old type with the shorter bezel).

I'm in need of a couple of these. Does anyone have any spare lamp modules you no longer use, which you'd be willing to sell to me? It's the item in the top right of this picture.

Please contact me direct if you have my details or send a PM on here if not.

Thanks!

Hi John, I've got an upgrade module, but I'm not sure if it's one of Biff's or a UK one (I suspect the latter, it wasn't that bright when I tried it), but I'll bring it to the Pennine AGM for you.

@Pitlamp I donated some headtorches (of which at least one had the upgrade in to Dave G. I know some of the torches were bust, so not sure how salvageable they were, but might be worth a reach out

Thanks first-ade; if it's not too bright it may not be the type I'm after but yes please, let's have a look at the AGM. (Or maybe compare your with the photograph above?)

Thanks JoshW; I suspect he'll need them himself but I can ask.

Cheers both.

If you have old, non-working modules, it may be possible to put new LEDs in them. It would be more difficult to make the interface of the module to the torch. The thing to check with new LEDs would be the heat output. Newer LEDs are brighter for the same power and put more of their energy out as light, so assuming you weren't going to up the power (because that would reduce run time) it shouldn't be a problem, but worth checking.

Thanks ChrisB - but all my existing ones work fine.
The ones JB used to make have just the right balance of power / duration for my needs, which is why I'm trying to source a couple more of the same items.
(Understood about more light / less heat from the latest LEDs.)

Would one of the maglight led conversion modules that can be reasonably easily bought, be repurposed for that?

ChrisB: not with my lousy abilities messing with sparks, I'm afraid.

Cantclimbtom: that's an interesting suggestion; it all depends if it'd fit. I'll have to keep my eyes open for someone with a converted Maglite to ask to have a look. (But do Maglites that small work with a four AA cell power supply, as in the Mini Q40? I thought the small Maglite torches only used one or two cells; maybe the Maglite lamp unit would blow with too high a voltage applied.)

I was thinking that there are people around who enjoy playing with sparks and might be happy to help?

Re Maglites, most take 2 cells, but LEDs are not generally fussy about voltage the way filament bulbs are, current matters more to an LED.

There's a range of maglite conversions about including 4 cell ones. 6 cell and even 8 maglites existed too but never looked at led conversion for 6 or 8.

There quite a few maglite conversion around so you need to check runtime (I assume you want longer runtimes than current obsession for ultra bright and short runtime?). Never tried to mix the mini Q40 and a maglite conversion but in your pic they look similar so wondered if it was worth investigating?

I found this on ebay
It looks very similar to your picture although I have no idea on dimensions
If you removed the springs and hacksawed the tapered reflector off and stuck a lens on the end this would look like your picture
The lens could be swapped from your old module
More information is needed of course to ensure it would work
eg dimensions, voltage of batteries, run time needed, heat dissipation, current is regulated in the module
Ali Express or one of the other sites may have what you need !!!
The search phrase could be "led torch module" or "led torch module for Q40"

Good luck in your search

Just had a rummage and found these three. Not sure if they are any use to you @Pitlamp or anyone else.

2 x CustomDuo inserts for miniQ40. Both used to work, but looking rather corroded now and the diffuser has fallen off one.

The other unit is a super-bright (as of about 20 years ago) LED conversion for a 4 D cell maglight. The LED has detached from the unit, but could easily be soldered back on.

Free to anyone who van make use, but @Pitlamp has first refusal.

(I slso found some other useful bits, so the time wasn't wasted regardless)
