Liverpool university pothole club

They are indeed. They no longer have a connection to the guild as they had extremely unreasonable requirements, and were acting against the advice of both CHECC, the representative body of university caving clubs, QMC, the governing body of caving qualifications and the BCA, the national body for caving.

Thanks to my phones autocorrect that should obviously say 'were' and not 'we're' - If a mod sees this and is able to correct that would be amazing.

I assume it was the Guild that were unreasonable?

Is there a log of what occurred anywhere? sounds a good read!

Blimey I am tired and really should have phrased it better. Yes the guild were the unreasonable ones!

Not really a log of it anywhere, it's something I wouldn't necessarily want too many details of floating about in the public space as I believe it has the potential to impact other university clubs positive relationships with their guilds. Will happily discuss over a pint next time we're both at the YSS though :)

I would read it too, sounds like a story that needs publishing, so that others don't fall into the same trap.

Still, I'm sure there are many ways to treat student groups, such as this classic from Feb 2016.

What's a "guild"? Is it what used to be called a students' union?

If the Liverpool Uni club has gone their own way to avoid hassle from the powers that be (who probably know nowt about caving) then I don't blame them. Good to know they're active despite authority's best effort to put obstacles in the way of folk getting underground.

Spot on Pitlamp, it's what Liverpool Uni call their student union.

Pitlamp summarises the situation well, LUPC have gone their own way but retain the name and exist as a BCA club. They are still actively supported by CHECC and the BCA Youth & Development Team.

I was at Liverpool Uni in the late 80's - in fact, I might have even been the Caving Club Secretary at some point. There was a rumour that the Student Union had been abolished because of a Mersey Ferry being hijacked as part of rag-week. The Guild rose in its stead, fulfilling similar functions. Back then, the club used to meet on a Thursday night in room B66 in the dingy basement of the 'Guild' building. I think we used to share it with some fishermen as there were a couple of fly reels in the room, but I never saw any fishermen - presumably they were down on the Mersey or its tributaries. Once a year we had to visit the Guild hierarchy, thence headed by Maeve, now Baroness Sherlock to plead our case for finace for the forthcoming year.
Thursday night meetings concluded, it was a wander down to The Phil, The Everyman, Ye Old Crack, The Oxford, or the Casablanca - invariably the Casablanca after the others. The Oxford was great, an end of terrace boozer, where the rest of the terrace had been pulled down, the Oxford standing in majestic isolation.

B66 was acquired in 1976 after much pleading with the Student Union. It was initially shared with one of the political clubs, but they were eventually "encouraged" to leave. And I do recall those annual pleadings for funds. The Everyman was a frequent Thursday destination as early as 1975.

Yes happy days, Thursdays in the Everyman and weekends in the Dales using things called ladders and lifelines, and Texolex helmets…..

Hello All! Only just finding this thread now. Thanks for answering JoshW

We are indeed still alive and kicking (just). Attempting to regain numbers and student membership but without connections with the Guild, its proving hard to get the word out! So nice to read all the stories and nostalgia from times gone by, they give me some encouragement to keep at it!😁

If you need further support in any way, reach out to either CHECC or Jono at BCA youth&development
