Major operation launched to rescue youngsters trapped in notorious Eryri slate mine

Hard to say whether party had the right experience for this trip, the very basic info suggest maybe not enough, as the times taking on route suggest not enough. however did at least have a survival bag, which no doubt help give some protection to the wet lad.

It's a relief this incident had a happy outcome but CRTT is no place for children nor anyone else lacking considerable underground exploration experience along with competence with placing and using vertical ropes, including for a self-rescue.

Whilst true, it's the lack of canoeing knowledge, which isn't usually a prerequisite of underground trips, that caused them to become unstuck. The first two were the wrong side of the lake to assist the one in trouble.

Their first mistake was to go there. Second was having only one 'competent' person to manage a group of novices in such a place. Third was the competent person getting well ahead and separated from the rest of the party by a long deep lake with a vertical drop that needs to be abseiled with accuracy and under control so one lands precisely IN the boat which one has just pulled into position from the stance at the top of the abseil wall. Fourth is to assume that an abandoned boat of unknown age and origin won't capsize or sink with you in it, and be able to handle that situation for yourself. I could go on. At the end of the lake is another steep rock wall that you somehow have to get UP to continue.

I'm not against having adventures, but this mine is an unsuitable venue for any group containing inexperienced or inadequately equipped people.

Having watched the video the lady made... and some of her other videos...

I think the words I'll choose - it might be good if she could find a club.

& the majority who do the trip do get away with it (as they would have if they'd bailed the canoe - the two of them who got across did get up the wall, and could have got back to the other if it wasn't flooded, or wouldn't have been a problem if all 3 had bailed it & gone across together), but that's surely how most of us started too...
