Marlbeck Level, County Durham

Yesterday I was looking at different mines in the northern pennine that could make for interesting trips and I stumbled across a mine called Marlbeck Level near Middleton in Teesdale. Despite seeing some interesting photos I could not find out a great deal about the mine. Has anybody been? and if so is it a good trip/are there any potential dangers like bad air?

Yes, its a long, cold, shaley and wet trip. The lowest adit in the Lodge Sike complex, the LH branch terminates in a rise up to Lodgesike Low Level. A RH branch ran under Monks Moor to an airshaft on the pasture above the road.

Worth one look in a lifetime (my quota fulfilled) but - yep - bad air very likely, especially in the RH branch.

It looks like the level is filled with a bunch of stalactites at some point during the trip, which is what gained my interest. do you remember how far into the mine this is?

Sadly, no. It was 40 years ago....!

James - there are some very photogenic stalactites. at the first junction underground, take the left branch. You will easily find them. The right hand branch has some stopes and nice geology views. Eventually, the oxygen levels drop, so take a meter.
