Mendip holiday list

You've got five days in the area. You want classics. They could be all dayers or three or four shorties all in a row. It's up to you. Suggestions please...

Five days on Mendip should be enough to do most stuff!

How about....?
1 day: GB thorough explore everywhere & then "do" Tynings Barrow Swallet
1 day: Swildon's Hole round trip via 4 detour & perhaps check out Vicarage Passage, NW Stream Passage and Black Hole series on way out (or do Swynne-Puke pull through above Shatter Pot on your approach to Swildon's 4?)
1 day: St. Cuthbert's Swallet comprehensive route taking in September series, to sump 2, Rocky Boulder series and maybe Maypole series?
1 day: Eastwater Cavern - twin verticals route/13 pots or just go as far as you can?...
1 day: Longwood August in morning and Manor Farm Swallet in afternoon to the bitter end/bottom of both.

Also perhaps check out SRT optional extras: Rhino Rift (multi-pitch pot), Thrupe Lane Swallet high ATLAS route (60m pitch).

... Mind you, you'll need to be pretty damn fit to do all that without a break! - also you'll need to organise a leader for Cuthbert's and keys/permits for GB, Longwood, Rhino Rift. Keys required for Tynings Barrow Swallet (I've got contact details if required) and you need to make goodwill payments for Swildon's Hole, Eastwater Cavern, & Manor Farm Swallet.

Also worth a look are...: Stoke Lane Slocker, Shatter Cave, Hunters Lodge Sink, hmmmm.... anyone else got any ideas?....

I am personally a little cynical of the '5 short caves in a row' proposition... since the natural progression would undoubtedly be (for me at least) '1 short cave and straight to the bar at the Hunter's' as would be common with any all-dayer on Mendip!

That too, could work!

In addition to the Capn's comments:

The Swildons Trip could be started by entering via Priddy Green Sink (although the 20 foot pitch will need to be rigged in advance).

Hilliers to Fairy Cave through trip in the morning with a Stoke Lane Slocker trip in the afternoon.

Eastwater to end of West End Series and out (takes about 7 hours apparently, haven't done either) or the new round trip. Both can only be done if you are thin and the weather is dry.

The Burrington caves in the Combe: Pierres Pot, Goatchurch, Sidcot Swallet, Lionel's Hole. Then if you have time, the caves on the top of the Combe: Bath Swallet, Rod's Pot, Drunkard's Hole and Bos Swallet.

Also Mendip isn't too far from Daren Cilau, Ogof Draenen and Aggy (probably about 2 hours drive), or the Forest of Dean.

Yup, that's the way it does work.

Ah! I thought you were doing a sort of "Fantasy" Cave League of trips on Mendip, not trying to find someone to sort out a five day caving marathon on your behalf! - Anyway, I live here so don't need to crush everything into a short burst of trips. I'd be quite happy to sort out a trip to Shatter Cave (if you're insured :D ). PM me

Try to work Stoke Lane into your plan. A very under rated cave with truly stunning stream way in stoke 2

I went down stoke lane yesterday and would definatly recomend that trip. Really varied and interesting.
Also did the short round in swildons with a trip down blue penceil on saturday which was really good too

Roger Taylor`s Cider Farm at Mudgely - you won`t need to go caving after that !

I think you mean Roger Wilkins. Roger Taylor plays drums for that little known boy band - Queen!

Yes your right - too many visits to Roger Wilkins ! By the way, while your on the boy band theme, Mick Jagger`s brother lives just near Roger Wilkins`s place ! Drugs, sex, cider & rock & roll !!!!! :p

then next day you could do longwood august, including fany's rift, if your mental.
the next day you could srt hunter's hole in the morning, then drop down to the eclusive swimming i cuckoo cleaves, in the evening you could do hunter's lodge inn sink, then round it off with a shit load of wilkins cider, sleep in the gutter
then in the morning bugger off back up north!
