Meta menardi in SUFFOLK

What are their bites like?; in the last couple of weeks I've had two instances of being bitten repeated times shortly after squirming in/out of a spider-infested entrance - first time something got down the back of my neck and bit my back 4+ times, and yesterday 4x on my head/neck (inside my helmet). I'm not sure what it was (couldn't see) but the bites are pretty vicious and take about 3 days to clear.

According to wikipedia: The European cave spider is not dangerous to humans and although (in common with nearly all spiders) they have venom, its effect on large mammals is negligible. They are unlikely to bite if carefully handled but if sufficiently provoked they are capable of inflicting an unpleasant "nip".

They were in abundance when I did Long Gour Cave in Yorkshire a few years ago, all over the inside of the entrance. Even when I ended up with quite a few stuck to my suit, we avoided any bites.

Thanks you two; from the sounds of it, it's something else then! - shall have a look-see at t'other critters on next visit.

More likely to be the multifarious mosquitoes that seem to be hiding out at the moment.

Having said that there was a news story about a lady whose arm swelled up after being bitten by a house spider the other day...

On a related theme, a few weeks ago I kept waking up with itchy lumps on various parts of my body. Then one evening this mahoosive house spider sauntered across the bedroom floor.  :o

I quickly dispatched it and since then... no more lumps. They had to be bites, presumably due to me rolling onto it during sleep or similar. Ugh!

Never been bitten by a cave spider, but I try and disturb them as little as possible. If one fell down the inside of your suit, I'm pretty sure it would bite you...
