I'm sorry to have to let people know that Mike Meredith has died. He had been suffereing from advanced prostate cancer.

Mike was living in Sarawak, where he had been since taking up the role as the first manager of the Mulu National Park. Subsequently he developed a training progamme and qualification for Park guides, which was widely adopted in the region. Before moving out there, Mike had worked for Petzl and was instrumental in developing and bringing to market much of equipment on which we rely today.

Sad to hear that, I've often wondered about the history of that survey, whether it was conglomeration of many or if it was hours of toil. I remember a small mention in the descent regarding Kevin Dixon's updated work.

It was an attempt to provide a survey which incorporated all the discoveries since the PUSA survey, and was knobbled together from existing surveys. As such, it was a bit controversial at the time. It wasn't very good, but it was a lot better than anything else available, and it still is.

Not very good! how rude ;-) It says on it, treat as a sketch with passages exaggerated.

I think it is brilliant.

That’s sad. I never met him but would have liked to shake his hand. Avid reading and re-reading of vertical caving as a 13/14yr old was one of the things that fired my enthusiasm for caving and learning SRT and sticking with a club as a shy kid. So thanks Mike whereever you are, your book inadvertently had a huge influence on my teens and 20’s.

If anyone happens to have a copy of it (with the photo cover (I wonder where that was taken?) I’d happily buy it

Worryingly both sellers on eBay, who want £67, show the second edition cover, but state the first edition date - so not sure which you will actually receive! Could always go for the definite first at £150...

JAA I have a new unsold copy of the book - photo cover. PM me if you would like it, free but a donation to your local CRO if you wish. Could be posted at cost or collected/caver post from the Dales.
