Modern survey candidates

Which Dales cave would you like to see a modern/updated survey for outside of the 3 counties system? I often find myself wanting to see a survey of caves but can’t find them!

You never know, maybe this thread could inspire some surveyors!

Mossdale, Langcliffe, Swarthgill, Black and White Kelds transposed onto a surface map. Just to see how they all relate to each other and how far there is to go.

Something like this?

Would they need re surveying to do that?
I don't know. I only have the black outline maps that appeared in the Great Whernside chapter of successive editions of Northern Caves. I once did a bit of elementary trig using them to locate the furthest reaches of Langcliffe as being just a few hundred metres NNE of the entrance to Mossdale (not that they are actually anywhere near connecting at that point!).

Kevin has been re-surveying the Gaping Gill system for quite a few years now. He should be almost finished by now.

Last year I helped him to carry maypoles to scale the parallel rift on the north side of Craven Aven, where the water comes from, to bolt up to the inlet above.

Interesting - do you know how this has been done? It would seem that my elementary trig (see my post above) was some way out. I once thought I'd made a stunning advance in Swarthgill, breaking through to the Black Keld master cave, only to realise we'd gone round in circles in the terminal choke.
I digitised the Mossdale survey during lockdown since there is a plan and elevation on the survey I have. That's just exported from survex and overlaid. I really need to upload the data to the cave registry.

The Lancliffe & Swarthgill surveys that I have don't have elevations, so these are just overlaid manually in Google Earth: north fixed to the right orientation, the whole survey scaled to the right dimensions, then moved to locate the entrance correctly. I suspect there are significant errors with that process, but it should be there or there abouts, and at least puts the Oddmire and Lancliffe entrances correct relative to one another.

Funny you should mention your Swarthgill round trip. I did something very similar there not too long ago. I was quite excited before realising the rift I'd followed had popped back out in Flake Cavern!

What do you rig off to get into Swarthgill?

Thanks for the extra information, Mark. Is it likely that Swarthgill is an inlet of Langcliffe? I had two trips beyond Nemesis but it was decades ago and I don't recall anything that way that would look likely. I'm very much an armchair caver these days but have always been interested to hear about the latest discoveries. I might have read somewhere that the bulk of the Black Keld system may be flooded with the Mossdale and Langcliffe streams dropping quite quickly once they break through to the Great Scar limestone.

Becka has been surveying the last few bits of Ireby on and off and could use a hand with finishing it off. If I remember correctly the non-trade routes (like Over Shadow) still need doing, plus some bits around the streamway

(although if you’re going to be strict about your definition of 3 Counties, then Ireby doesn’t count)
