I have only found an awkward dry crawl at the entrance when I have been there, but the rest is quite spectacular

It happened in 1982, a day or two after some poor soul died in Sunset Hole as a result of the thunderstorm.

Was that the poor bugger that got washed off the 50?

Sunday morning (15th); I just tipped another 2 inches of rain out of the gauge (which fell mainly overnight, on top of the 6 inches from the preceding week).

Not really potholing weather.

This morning the Ribble at Settle reached the highest level ever recorded. (The guage was installed in 1973)

This is a BIG flood.

How are the water levels now? I was planning to go to the Dales this weekend, but I've heard from a couple of people that roads have been flooded this week and more rain in forecast tonight and tomorrow.

Still very wet - Beck Head Stream Cave entrance was resurging yesterday at one point and there's been more rain since.

However, I suspect things will start to become a bit less severe by the weekend, particularly by Sunday when a forecast frost on Saturday night will probably drop rivers considerably.

The fells are completely sodden however, so even a small amount of rain can bring rivers back up very fast. So (obviously) checking weather forecasts carefully before caving is particularly important at the moment.
