Mystery object at Ribblehead

Sorry, not the best image - but I'm sure many forum members will have noticed this new mast, which went up a year or two ago. It's got a solar panel, a wind turbine and two cameras (splayed at about 90 degrees, both pointing at the road). It's about half a mile past the Ribblehead T junction when heading in the direction of Hawes, before the Gritstone hut and well before Gearstones. Quite close to Conduit Springs Cave, in fact.

Out of interest, does anyone know what it's for and / or who will have erected it?

It is an NYCC Highways thing to do with road temperatures and gritting as well as providing live traffic/road condition pics.
They have quite a few and they are genuinely really useful for journey planning in winter! I used to use the Sutton bank one most mornings to see how bad the commute to Scarbados was going to be from Reeth!

Thanks both. So I don't need to complain about the creeping surveillance society then, as it's actually useful!

While we're on the mysteries of the B6255, does anyone know why these notices have been placed at regular intervals from Gearstones to the Dent turnoff? Is somebody .aving a laff?

When they can't see anything from the camera, it is time to send the snow plough out. ☃️
