New Goyden Developments

The BSD are pushing a number of leads in New Goyden at present.
1. A 25m high aven just beyond the Planetarium - this was climbed to a chamber at the top with nasty steep mudbank. In the roof was small tube that after digging opened into standing height passage with choke roof and wall very similar to one seen in Pigskin pot 30m away. We are hoping this will link that pot to the Goyden system.
2. Dye Hard bedding in Hardy Pools passage. Low grotty miserable dig. Only reason we are digging it is that dye put down Pigskin pot came out here and not the 25m aven as hoped.
3. Astronomer's passage leading off the Planetarium. Huge inlet passage. We are digging this to create new entrance into New Goyden that will provide flood exit route/better beginners entrance to see impressive huge main stream passage/good access for digging gear for other projects
4. Inlet by upstream sump 1 beyond the duck. Here quite a good flow of water enters brining with it black and orange mineralisation. This might be coming from Limley Mine southern crosscut driven to Dry Wath fault.
[Note: We are also hoping to use a JCB to dig open Limley Mine airshaft. After a lot of research by one of our members we are confident of its location]

3. Astronomer's Dig
You climb up a ramp south side of the Planetarium of New Goyden pot to the right of where water cascades out from a small hole. Once you reach the water concealed is a fine large passage. It passes a few clean avens to what looks like a fork in the passage. It is in fact one bedding passage with dug out way to the right that leads to a bedding where the stream comes from. To the left is a low arch through to the base of a choked aven...our dig. Photo of the low arch through to the aven choke. Diggers feet in the background! Next job here is to prod the choke to get the clean washed boulders to collapse and then haul them back along the passage to the Planetarium.

3. Astronomer's project- Surface dig
As well as digging up the choked aven in Astronomer's passage we are now digging down from the surface in an old quarry between New Goyden pot and Pigskin pot.

hmmm...... we have survey data that puts Astronomer's passage nearby but closer to the river. We are hoping if no actual inlet cave there to use the shale band that we should soon encounter to dig towards Astronomer's shaft. 'Proven right' we shall see!

Dig in Dye Hard bedding...... Dye from Pigskin pot 57m away 37m higher took under 11mins to get there. We were expecting it to come out the 25m aven but it came out here. Horrendous dig as pulling back spoil produces ripples of mud in that pool to flood into your eyes...twice had to go blind all way down hard Pools passage to main river to wash them out. Hence name Dye Hard.

4. We have dug the inlet by New Goyden upstream sump1 such that the passage is now 8m long heading into a 'blank area'. The passage is on the line of the Dry Wath fault and the stream entering is bringing in significant red and black deposits typical of mine deposits. The Limley Mine had a cross cut pushed south from the main mine towards Dry Wath vein. May be our inlet will intersect the mine???. Meanwhile Tony Cook (BSD) has spent time researching Limley mine and overlaid the mining map from late 1800's onto Google Earth in our attempt to locate the lost airshaft. We are now quite confident of where this is and hoping to use an excavator soon to dig and open up the shaft to explore the mine. The photo is of an initial overlay since then we have a more accurate fix putting the shaft closer to the wall.

Its actually just thin layer of slop on top of solid floor but you are right Derbyshire trained for such a dig ha

Here is the revised and most up to date original Limley lead mine re-opening survey (1890) overlayed on an OS Yorkshire C.10 map (1892) and the current Goole Earth image. All scales and orientations are matched up this time.
