I've recently moved to Bristol from Manchester, where I was a member of the Manchester Scout Caving Club, such as it was.

Having been caving in Derbyshire for a few years, I'm looking to join a club in this area, where I can get to know some new cavers and caves, and develop my skills.

Ideally, I'm looking for a club based in Bristol, or with some members in the city, so that we can share driving and not miss out on the post-caving drinks, which I assume are a tradition down here as much as they are in Derbyshire (long live the Wanted Inn!)

Any suggestions?

Steve.

Hi Steve. There are a lot of clubs in the area - you could do worse than checkout both ACG or Cheddar Caving Club - you can link to either from this forum. The Bristol based clubs that I know of are University of Bristol SS, South Bristol SS or Cotham CG. I'm not sure of their contact details - but a quick internet search should come up with something. Alternatively J'rat at Bat Products should be able to help you out. BEC, Wessex, Shepton are all Priddy based. Cerberus, MCG and MNRC are not far away either. The choice is endless - almost! :)

Steve,

Quite a few to choose from in / around Bristol. 3 of the top of my head, but I'm sure there are plenty of others

South Bristol Speleological Society

Bristol Exploration Club

Wessex Caving Club.

Wessex and BEC have club huts on the Mendips as well

Your choice of club will probably be dependent on your ambitions. Are you an experienced caver or relatively new to it all? Do you want to do overseas expeditions? Do you want to find new caves (i.e. active digging)? Do you want to do sport/recreational caving? Do you want to train up novices? Do you want to learn techniques (unless you've already got them from your time in Derbyshire)? Are you looking to meet new people/make friends?

Stuff that, do or do you not drink Butcombe? :?:  8)

.. if you do, you probably talk about caving rather than doing it and if you don't you're probably young, fit, beautiful and envied by beardy non-cavers who often have runny poo.

Ignore the wimpy lager drinker.

OK, thanks for the replies. What I'm after is recreational caving, and the chance to get to know some caves and people in the area. I'm more interested in weekday evening trips, since I'm a Scout Leader, so I only have occaisional free weekends.
I would like to learn / improve techniques, with a view to ultimately getting some kind of leadership qualification.

I'm no too bothered about digging - I prefer to enjoy my time underground!

I do drink Butcombe, don't have a beard, and my poo is generally fine. 8) As for young and beautiful, well I'm 27, and you'd better ask my wife.

Steve.
