After long day yesterday, last thing I wanted to do was leave a warm fire and head off out again - however, I really wanted to see the Northern Lights!
Out I went, drove up towards Kingsdale, stopping at the millennium monument thing. It was blummin cold, I could hear owls hooting and Thornton Force. There were a few cars coming and going, also on the look out but most stayed for just a few minutes. I drove to Braida but a bit mizzly there. Back to the monument, there is a lot of light pollution looking over the valley.
I stuck it out, getting excited when the clouds parted and I could see the stars and a bright moon - but no light show ☹️

..... And then the clouds started to glow red... Not exactly what I'd hoped for, but at least something 😁

No laughing!

There was a definite magenta hue to the clouds at times last night, looking to the north from the Clapham area. I've seen it really good in the Dales twice over the years. One was in the early noughties from near Clapham and the other time was whilst camping on the GG winch meet in August (but I can't remember the year). A pretty awesome sight both times. On both occasions I found myself pondering on what early civilizations would have made of it.

Pity about the clag last night.

These are pretty good too. I suspect this is one of the least visited passages in Britain.

8th November 1991 perhaps...

My pal, Chris and I came out of Large Pot that night to a blistering cold night and the Northern lights. My logbook says "we were treated to a magnificent display of the Aurora borealis and an even better pint of Theakstons in the Wheatsheaf" 😁

No it was definitely some time after the year 2000; yours must have been a different one.
I'd guess 2003 (without wading through a load of diary entries).

Sunday they were fairly obvious even in Somerset, last night wasn't as good & only a very short burst.
