I know where there is a giant phallus in a French cave that definitely dates back to the Palaeolithic (probably Middle Magdalenien).

There's nowt new under the sun (or even out of it).
 
Maybe once they have moved on from novice, we should call them Tyros - A beginner or learner in anything; one who has mastered the rudiments only of any branch or knowledge.

I've only heard it used in reference to young climbers in the times of Bonnington, Brown & Whillans...

Well accepted (if old fashioned) word used in kayak/canoe coaching to mean just what has been said on this thread.

Appears in all the good (old fashioned!) kayak coaching manuals and materials........

It's also a word used by newly qualified pilots to give air traffic control an idea of their possible/probable inexperience.

haha i can tell mandy's away! altho i've never heard u use novice! ]

you did used to call student caver scum! but said were exempt coz we started caving before univisty lol!
