Oaks Colliery explosion anniversary 2025

Barnsley has the sad & dubious honour of being the site of England's worst mining disaster. The exact death toll will probably never be known exactly and was originally thought to be 361; research, years later, suggests 383 with the youngest recorded as 10 the oldest as 67. Tomorrow, the 12th, is the anniversary and there will be a short service at one of the 3 memorials to the disaster (the latest one beside Barnsley St. Mary's Parish Church). I'm sure anyone connected with mining will be with us 'in spirit' as we gather at 1:00. All are welcome to attend.

Here are some pictures of today's (Friday 12th) commemoration. The coalmining industry has seen some loss, tragedy, injustice and strife in its time - in fact some still continues at the National Museum at Cap House. The fourth picture alone encompasses over a century of it with Orgreave veteran John Dunn stood in front of the monument which commemorates England's worst mining disaster - The Oaks explosion in Barnsley which took place this day in 1866.
