Odin Mine

3 of us went down on the tourist trip on Saturday. Despite the evil reputation :uhoh: I think Odin is one of the better mines to visit - especially with some of the pretties, and some impressive stempling. Got a few photos, which I will try to send in when I get time.
In before midday, and out before 230. And changing in some of the nicest weather so far this year. 8)

it was really good, and for someone who's only really been in 'natural' caves it's a really different type of caving. :)

lots of history!

Next on my list to do.

Anyone got an accurate 8 fig grid ref, or good description for approaching the entrance, survey or SRT topo.

I think its in the crewe rigging guide - or on the mini guides available at HnH.

You *really* dont need an 8 fig grid ref to find this one, drive up to mam tor (bottom road) and look for the girt big mine on your left. first pitch is from a tree on the right hand side of the gorge up towards the back. (should be able to spot p bolts just over the lip for a re-belay.

Note - tie your rope off at the bottom, ropes have been nicked here by dick head tourists pulling them up, leaving cavers stranded at the bottom of the first pitch.

topo and rope lenghts are in the Peak District Rigging guide.
I could tell you what they are, but proceeds of sales of the guide go to the bolting fund..

... plus the PDF guide you already referred to gives you pitch lengths.

I have distant memories of doing Odin about 40 years ago.  I'm sure there was a deep rift at the entrance gorge but when I visited it a few years ago it had gone.  Anybody know what happened to it or is my memory playing up?

As you go up the gorge towards the entrance on the right hand side almost opposite Odin Cave there is a hole which my daughter and I had a quick explore of, we had no gear with us so didn't go far but it still seemed to be going when we turned round, does it go anywhere?
