Out Sleets Beck Pot Resurgence

I recently took a trip down out sleets beck pot, and was very impressed with the classic stream passages and pitches. The passages were incredibly varied and joy of bobbing through the duck like corks paired with drifting through the bedding planes at the end while the languid water slapped and slopped at the walls, made it a superb trip.

What was also very intriguing was that at the end after climbing up into a broken and chocked passage there was a spider scuttling between the rocks! When looking at the survey the passage I was in seemed to be metres or less from breaking out to the surface.

Does anyone know if attempts have been or are being made to dig to the surface or if there are reasons why it hasn't been pushed?

Outsleets was one of my favourite short trips for pretty much the reasons you have stated. I'm not sure why it hasn't been forced through to the resurgence but I would hazard a guess at conservation? If it became a pull-through trip that would inevitably lead to an increase in traffic. I believe a similar thing occurred at the elbow bend towards the end of Birks Fell where the cave gets very close to the surface.

The survey places the end 20' from the resurgence, and Harry claims to have heard the cascades below the resurgence from inside. I don't think that conservation was the issue, just no one has bothered. It would be a very fine through trip.

If it did ever become a through trip it would need very settled conditions to be able to get all the way through to the end, even in drought the water levels are high.

I had a poke around at the resurgence and pulled a few boulders away from the outside earlier this year. There are 2 obvious main resurgences where the end approximately is, both with similar flows. One is located directly under a Drystone wall, and the other isn't. I mostly poked round the more easterly one which isn't under the Drystone wall. Both are definitely worth a proper look.

I was mostly out for a walk so didn't have any tools. I didn't request any permission so didn't do anything too drastic. Agreed it would make a fantastic through trip. I am unlikely to return due to lack of time.

If you follow the dry valley down, there is on obvious dry waterfall near the bottom with a small hole in the right hand side looking down stream. If you are having a furtle, that is probably worth a look, and there is another hole further upstream that is crawling size going uphill. No idea how far that goes, again had no time to go back.

Birks fell would also make a great through trip, but I guess digging in to known cave is a lot of effort for known cave!

Also meant to say, not aware of anyone looking at it, or having looked at it for a long time, I think the local diggers I know are focussed elsewhere these days!

I did attempt it about a more than decade ago with landowner permission, I tried two places. One straight down I hit the water but had no way on, and one into the hillside through the rocks. Prob is I did not know what I was doing back then, and did not have capping gear, I spent my time hand-chiseling the rock. Surprised I got as far as I did lol.
