I was puzzling as to the purpose of the trench, then I read (and they'd put it in bold not me ) their explanation

I'd prefer not to see any of the quarrying and cement infrastructure in the Peak, but then I'm a beneficiary of their products one way or another, and capture of their immense cabon emissions is i think needed. No easy answer to these things...

I also did not, but on the PDNP map, screenshot and link - there clearly is.

Possibly a reference to it here:

There's a gas pipeline runs up the Long Causeway from Redmires Reservoirs and then along the back of Stanage Edge, so they're pretty good at these. No idea where it comes from or goes to, or even when they installed it, but I wonder how many noticed it going in?

The oil pipeline can be found at field boundaries by a white painted stile looking concrete structure (there's one which has a sign saying not a footpath on it). It did have a leak a good few years ago when some ejit put a digger bucket through it in Furness Vale. I think it's one of the network which largely moves Jet A about. It would have been connected to a terminal at Dove Holes and the one near Hazel Grove when the RAF dispersed their fuel across the country in big underground tanks with rail terminals and pipelines.

Took a look on Saturday, the pipeline obvious *after* it's pointed out.
I think there's a GPSS style (old but more discreet than the modern ones) marker in Speedwell car park but as you go up the pass, before the right hand end on the left is a yellow grit/salt bin and opposite it on the right is a really obvious GPSS marker (just before the base of elbow ridge).

I remember that pipeline being laid. Late 1960's, part of the national grid for North Sea Gas. I don't think it runs up Long Causeway but the line can be seen across the moor from Burbage Bridge to Stanage pole. I think from there it heads north to Moscar.

Interesting, those maps don't show the Peak and South Pennine gas pipelines. Perhaps they're not part of the high pressure grid?
