Hello again cavers!
Last weekend, I was doing a charity fundraiser for my workplace, supporting Children In Need. In which I decided to take on the Peak -> Speedwell trip, and then a 8 hour hike the next day. As normal... My trip turned out rather eventful, so here is another trip report! I hope you enjoy!
We arrived to the TSG hut at around 9:30 to get geared up and out! However, I forgot my trespass fee, so a quick run the the post office solved that! I got geared up in my wetsuit and oversuit ready to go.
(You may want to pay attention to the colour of the Pudsey ears)
However my other friend (Luca) wasn't having much luck... He forgot his wellies (fear not... The odd wellies from the wellie bin worked the trick), he brought his skate helmet (in which the head torch would not stay on
), and instead of his warmbac oversuit he decided it was time for a change... I've attached a image from Google of what he got, whatever floats your boat!
After all getting ready, myself, Luca and Will left to go to Peak Cavern, alongside Alister and Will's dad tagging along for the walk! After arriving we were greeted by the golden lab who didn't bat an eye to us
. We then walked to the beginning of our trip, where Alister suggested I handed him the Pudsey bear ears to save them for the hike tomorrow... But why on earth would I hand them over when I could wear them caving
... Alister then went on to help Luca sort his skater boy helmet out! We finally got it to work though!
And so the trip began! We navigated through the muddy ducks (in which Lucas head torch had fallen off already), trough the treasury passage, and to the beginning of "The Trenches"... Which I see why it got that name, sloppy mud, water all put together. I think I'm starting to see why wearing the ears wasn't a good idea. But we push on. But no... It gets much.. much worse! I was first in the crawl, Luca second and finally Will. Luca who's directly behind me in the trenches says "I think I'm going to be sick"... YOU FEEL SICK? My worst nightmare was about to come true, either he was throwing up all over me, or I was crawling back through his sick. When I tell you I started crawling fast. I was crawling alright. Will suggested we head to the Ventilator to take a break, and then decide if we needed to turn back.
We arrived to the ventilator, in which Luca sat down (he had not been sick yet). We gave him some water, and a snack. Thankfully he wasn't sick but myself and Will decided it was too risky to take Luca further in the system to Speedwell as we still had the rest of the crawl, and all the water later on, and if he was sick deeper into the system it may have turned out more problematic than it needed to be.
It was a shame we didn't get to speedwell to say the least, but I'll 100% be doing the trip again soon (if your interested, let me know!). We headed out of the trenches, and Luca felt himself again which was good. Instead of ending the trip however, we took an easier route and took a look at the lower sump as Will hadn't saw it before. It was a nice route, which I had done a few weeks prior with Birmingham Caving Club.
We also had a look at 2 of the emergency food stores in case of flooding, which was super cool to see as I had no idea these even existed! After checking out the sump, we took the trip back to the beginning where we got cleaned off with the brushes, before heading into the main show cave.
It was a lovely trip, and we really did enjoy it. There are so many more routes I want to check out at Peak, so I'll definitely be taking a visit again soon! However, the day had only just started! It was time to celebrate the first challenge for charity completed... And what better way to do it than go to the pub with some of my other friends who came for the hike the following day! Below you can see the post trip photos, the lovely pub trip and if your interested... Here are the Pudsey ears. Was really fun caving with you Will, hope to get out again!
We finished the night by drinking at the TSG hut with Alister, Ben and Ben Marks who showed up later in the night, Rebeka and Josiah, my 2 friends from the hike the following day. We planned to be awake for 7:30... We ended up going to bed at 3AM, you can probably guess we didn't get up for the 8.5 hour hike at 7:30, rather 9AM. We decided purchasing a 1L Vodka and only 1 mixer was a good idea... But fear not! Alister came to save the day with the black current squash (which oddly, tastes really nice). Was a real good night guys, your all an awesome bunch!
That concludes my trip report, might of gone on a tangent, but without the story of the day you miss it all! As mentioned, it was such a great day & night. The following day we walked 25km for Children In Need again. We ended up raising £250+ for charity!
I hope you enjoyed the trip report!
