That's a long-standing UK Caving thing whose origins lie forgotten in the mists of time...

Though I expect someone on here can remember. It certainly goes back to 2006.

There is something strange going on with the search on ukcaving as typing in pendant brings up 15 results, whilst Google finds 17 within this website, but somehow only a couple of the same ones come up on both! (Less surprising is that neither find this topic.) Pyjamas (a passage name) is used in the 2nd thread (caving photos 2003), but the search doesn't find it (however, it does find several other references to the same passage, some posted only shortly after that !?!)

Even weirder, searching pedant finds 4 uses, all this year (again not this discussion), but Google finds at least 23 previous entries...

The search does now bring up this thread & the first reference found in 2006 mentions the original error about a month before, so it appears to be this discussion, including Roger W starting off the pedantry:

Looking back at MSD's post on 14.10.2006 in the New to caving - what to buy... thread, I suspect that Peter Burgess had already acquired the name or title of Forum Pendant after some outburst of pedantry/pendantry, probably on some other thread. Maybe Cap'n Chris can remember something?

The July 2006 swildons rope link above had Duncan Price typing pendant by mistake, shortly after your comment on it, but yes, it was others that deserved the title - nickwilliams in pedant mode that September:

According to some, SRT Rope should be retired at a certain age regardless of use or visable damage. The basic pricipal being that a rope which looks in new condition but which is ten years old may be unsafe while a one year old rope which looks worse could be fine. So the theory goes that ropes...
